So here is my issue. My computer was turned off improperly. It was force turned off by the power surge which also turn off my tv, computer, cell phone charger etc. Well when I realize this I turned it back on. Now when I turn the power back on on the power supply the mobo will light up like it is ready but when i reach around the front of the computer to hit the on button it wont turn on. I cant seem to figure out where to start to fix this problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Do you get any tones (beeps), or does it just sit there? Do the fans run? Hard drives spin up?

If you're not getting any tones, then there's a good chance the Power Supply is gone. Look for bulging capacitors on the motherboard. It's usually a tell tale sign that it's fried. You could be looking at one fried component or many (psu, cpu, mobo, ram, hd etc).

Did you have a surge protector?

First swap the PSU with a known good PSU and see if it works.

A good quality PSU usually takes cares of the power surges, even killing itself -- but doesn't harm other components. (No, I'm not talking about the infamous rosewill PSUs...)

Anyhow, first swap the PSU to see if it boots, then the motherboard.

Try flipping the switch on the psu so it's off press the power button on your case a few times then flip the psu switch back on and try turning it on again.

I get a tone. I dont hear the hard drives spin. I have tried taking wires out and plug them back in. I tried turning the PSU off/replugging the wires in and turn in it on and still nothing. A buddy told me to reset the cmos so I am looking into that. I think I fried the mobo but not sure yet.

Find out what casued the surge! if there was a storm or act of GOD then you have to replace yoruself. But if there was a exploding transformer or something of entergys fault. Sometimes under very unusual circumstances entergy will have to pay for the stuff.

I would try a psu first!

sounds like your PSU took one for the team, if it's a quality one it probably woulda took a bullet and the mobo should work.

Just try a known good PSU and see if it works, you're probably going to end up ordering a PSU anyway, you could just order one, and then if the PSU works then your problem is solved, if the PSU doesn't work, then your mobo is shot as well.

Another option is to strip it down to below min specmin spec.
You just want psu, mobo and cpu + hs.
Now power on.
If you get no bios beeps for the missing ram/vid card then its either psu, mobo, cpu thats shot or a combination of the three.
If you get bios beeps then replace ram and you should get bios beeps for bad vid card and visa vera.
Rebuild untill you find the bad part.

Luck ......... :D
