I need some help comparing cards and google isn't giving me clear results.

Could someone please rank the following cards in order of most powerful to least powerful?

1650x1080 resolution
4xAA 16xAF
DX10 Only

Radeon HD 6850 1gb
Radeon 4890 1gb
Radeon HD 5830
Geforce GTX 460 1gb
Geforce GTX 460 768mb
Geforce GTX 285 1gb

I know things are vague because many comparisons may be game specific so a rough estimate is fine.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting conflicting answers from google research such as:
Going from a 285 to a 460 is a sidegrade
The 6850 trades blows with the 460
The 5830 barely outpaces a 5770
The 4890 is better than a 5770
The 4890 trades blows with a 5830

The 6850 trades blows with a 460 and the 460 isn't much of an upgrade from the 285 and the 285 trades blows with the 4890... but it's obvious that the 6850 destroys the 4890.... hence the confusion.

the big difference is that when you get into the higher end cards like the gtx 460 4800 series and 5800 series. they dont scale as well at lower resolutions. they are really made for high resolutions like 1920x1080 and higher. so the only way to show the true scaling of the card that resolution is by throwing in a ton of AA to increase the load on the cards. so even 4xAA really isnt going to give you a fair comparison of the cards since they should all be able to run it and probably near the same frame rates as well. get into the 8xAA or 16xAA area and you really start seeing which card is better.

but out of that group id say the 6850 gtx 460 1GB and 768mb are the best cards for that resolution. the 4890 is good but to loud and to hot, and the gtx 285 is just pointless for that resolution.

Check out this for a good comparison of the 6850/6870/460. They averaged the framerates across across all games. HD6850 and GTX460 1GB are really neck and neck until 2560x1600 w/8xMSAA, and at that point the games aren't really playable anyway.

P.S. Almost all GTX460s are overclocked now, so they'll perform a bit better than that. They also tend to be slightly more money than the 6850 though. Really you can sort of just pick a price, and you'll get a good card no matter what you end up with. :)

6850, 5830, and 460 1GB are the same.
285
4890
The 4870 in its heyday would tie the GTX 260 with 216 SP. The 4890 is one granule better than a 4870, and the 285 is one rung above 260.

Go on techpowerup. Their reviews from even three months ago don't use DX11 in DX11 games, and include all of last generations big boys.

PS: The GTX 460 scales extremely well with core and memory overclocks. It can easily leapfrog performance tiers with good cooling and some binning luck so if you OC, look at the POV 460 performance.

all of what you posted is fairly accurate, so at this point, you really should just be considering gtx460 or 6850 out of those choices and at your resolution. either would be a substantial upgrade from your 4850.

The GTX460 1GB ~= HD6850 depending on the game (~$180 range) and are slightly faster than the HD4890, HD5830, and GTX285.
All of these cards are pretty close to each other, but only the HD6***, HD5*** and GTX4** cards support DX11.
The HD6850 and GTX460 1GB usually overclock great, too.

The HD6870 or GTX470 (~$250 range) is good step up, and is slightly faster than the HD5850.

Agreed with the above posters that said you need to be looking at the 6850 and GTX 460 out of that list.

I actually have a 6850 on the way to me. I'm overseas so I had my buddy to reship it where I am and he's being lazy. I was doing the comparison for him.

He's into Nvidia, and I'm into ATI. We were looking at the most cost effective upgrade from his GTX 260 that's artifacting. He'll most likely be going GTX 460 unless the fermi refresh has compelling options.

It was just hard to compare when I see a used 4890 going for $100, or a 285 going for $130 and it makes the $180 GTX 460 or 6850 seem like it's not worth it if it's just a sidegrade from either of those cards.

The $135 285 would have been the best price/performance.
the 6850 and 460's have DX11 which is a path I'm not needing yet (hence the 4870x2).
Both 460 and 6850 are awesome though, I got a Palit 460 1GB for my cousin and overclocked it. It performed quite well but still no match for my 4870x2 :p , the 285 is a little weaker than my card but can overclock (whereas my card can't).

$115 gtx 460 768mb for 1680 res., problem solved?

Lol I agree why are you so confused about what you are saying, when it is true?

because from research I'm seeing that 6850~=460~=285~=4890 but $180!=$150!=$135!=$100 that's why.

used is always cheaper than brand new, new tech is usually more expensive than old tech (assuming performance is similar). any other price difference would be attributed to the performance gaps between cards. don't know why there should be any more questions. i already linked above in my previous post to a smoking hot deal for a 768mb asus gtx 460 top edition @ $115 a/r ($135 before applied with 10% discount @ newegg). should be a complete no brainer for your friend, and will be a decent bump from his broken gtx 260 and comes with dx11 to boot. no other cards need to be considered at that price point and for his 1680x1050 resolution.

I really do appreciate the help. I was merely answering that other person. By the way, look at who submitted that hot deal in the first place. :) He's got his card picked. Much Thanks.

I don't like my 460GTX 768Mb because it still has shutter issues in some of the games i play.. the HD6850 would be my pick because it overclocks very well without breaking 150watts and can give near HD6870 performance.

haha, didn't even see that. very nice!
