Need Help Choosing PS3 vs Xbox360

I am in the process of purchasing a next gen system. But need some help in choosing which one to get. I don't play as many games as I used to but still will occasionally just play the sports games or games like Guitar Hero when people are over. Looking for a system that is more of a media center, I guess you can say. I see both systems have there good and bads. No matter what I would buy either system to play Blu-ray or HD-DVD, obviously depending on the system. So I guess that puts them at the same price level, XBox 360 $399.99+199.99 (maybe even more if i opt for elite just to have HDMI) or PS3 599.99. So then this is where it gets difficult for me to choose since now they are the same price. I know connecting the xbox to computer is relatively easy from what I read but just never hear much of PS3 as able to do quite as much as xbox in that regard. I always read that it will soon be more of the same but not quite sure when that will be.

So basically just wondering what you guys would do, I feel like PS3 has a lot of potential that is just not being seen right now and may be better system just because everything is integrated with sony's plan to use all integrated parts whereas Microsoft says system will be based on core's model. I plan on keeping one system for awhile and another thing that worries me is the reliability that I read on this forum of the 360s. Right now I am just so confused on which one is right for me...lol....so thanks for any advice you guys give!
 
What do you want more, an HD movie player or a gaming machine?

If you want HD, I'm pretty sure the PS3's Bluray playback is superior to the 360's HD-DVD playback. Also, from what I've heard Bluray is taking off more than HD-DVD at the moment.

If you want games, right now the 360 is where it's at. And in the near future it's looking to hold on to that crown.

So which do you want more?
 
Gaming is not as important to me as is the Media Center aspects I am seeking including High Definiton movies.
 
If you want something you can watch movies on your PC off of, then go with 360. Actually, if that and HD-DVD movie playback is all you really wanted, get the $300 core and the $200 HD-DVD drive. Then it would only be $500. Stick TVersity on your PC, and you're good to go. And if you want to download movies in the future (you might or might not), then you could later get one of the HDDs.

PS3 = great media center, half assed game player (that may change though)

Xbox 360 = game player, decent media player (the elite will probably make it better though). The 360 is also designed to stream content from a computer so that is another advantage. The elite will hold twice the data the PS3 can hold, so that may be a major decisive factor in your purchase. Of course, you can always pony up and put your own drive in the PS3. But the xbox can stream content from an MediaPC with virtually limitless capacity (whatever you want it to be really).

Decide which of the exclusive games you prefer, buy console.
 
actually, your best bet if you're primarily about HD content is to get yourself an MCE box or wait for Windows Home Server, then snag yourself a Media Center Extender. There are also a number of inexpensive devices ($150 or so not counting hard drive) that you can connect to your TV for HD content and drop in your own 3.5" SATA drive for storage (currently up to 750GB possibility with 1TB coming soon).

If media is your primary thing, neither PS3 nor 360 are worth your time.
 
Tough call. When it comes to the sports games, most of the big names are on both consoles, as well as some of those other games, including Guitar Hero 2 now. Like Technoob suggested, look at the exclusives and first party titles and decide what you'd like. I don't have a PS3 yet, so I can't comment on their BluRay player, but I have watched a couple HD-DVD movies on the 360 and it's pretty nice. The 360 also has a lot of downloadable content, with TV shows and full length movies. Though I don't like the way the movies are handled at the moment, with it only lasting for 14 days, and like 24 hours once you actually play it. I'm not sure if Sony has something similar to Microsoft, in that department, yet.
 
Dunno if this will help you or not. Consider getting a regular joe Tivo and maybe a slingbox pro? I can stream and control my Tivo from my Windows Smart Phone if I wanted. :cool:
 
Do you currently own a PS2?

ATM there arnt a lot of PS3 titles out, but the PS2 library is HUGE... Over the last 8 years I've done a lot of gaming on my GameCube, DreamCast and PC... I never owned a PS2...

So for me, one of the big things is that my PS3 can play all those PS2 games I never got to play through.... GoW and GoW2 .. and a huge amount of other games... PS2 games are really cheap now $10-$40 bucks ... So between trying to still beat games on older consoles, PC, PS2 games and new PS3 games... working and a child, I have more than enough entertainment.

what type of receiver do you have, and TV?
 
The 360 is great for media if you have a media center PC (either XP MCE or Vista). Does damn near anything you can think of media wise, the live marketplace has movies and TV shows for download aswell. Game lineup is great too.

Actually, you don't need an MCE-edition Windows anymore. Since the last spring dashboard update, regular ol' Windows XP works fine too.

You dont need it to stream music and certain videos, but if you want Tivo functionality, the ability to stream video formats other than WMV, Radio, and a few other things you still need MCE.
 
Considering your needs maybe a console isn't exactly what you want??

But if you do want gaming I think both are great for your needs. The 360 def at this point is better for the gaming part and the PS3 may have some slight edges in the media center point. But they will both do what you want for about the same price...considering you would buy the HDDVD drive for the 360.
 
I have a launch 360 and 30 games. Worth every penny. If you want a 360, i would wait for the elite to hit stores in a few weeks.

As for the PS3... I have one sitting in my newegg.com shopping cart right now, but i just can't seem to bite the bullet and buy it.
 
The answer seems clear to me PS3 much better media center than xbox360.

HDMI 1.3 for your high def movie watching pleasures
 
360 all the way. Media Center + HD-DVD OR Blu-Ray (like M$ will miss out on the money making if BR *does* win).

Oh yeah, and Xbox Live.

I hate Xbox Live as much as I hate WoW :p I can't stand paying monthly fees.... :p

Meh... I wish that were the case. I've been subscribed to Xbox Live since a week before it actually released to the public. Having played Halo 2 online numerous times, I can say with 100% certainty it doesn't keep the trash out, if I think I know what you're getting at. :(

Yes, there is trash, but the subscribtion fee does 'HELP' keep players in check. Obliviously the world is full of A-holes. Most of the games seems to have a great online community though. Halo 2 does not.... and Gears of War is getting almost as bad.
 
Yup, it does depend on the game. Rainbow Six: Vegas seems to be pretty good. I really haven't run into any idiots on there. With Halo 2 it eventually got to the point where it was impossible to find a match that didn't have little stupid kids running around calling other gamers "fags" and the "n" word, without resorting to just playing with only those on my friends list.
 
The people who complain about xbox live's players...I wonder, have they ever played games online before? I've been playing since early quake days, UT, CS, RTCW, EQ, WoW...

get both...I did :D

anyway, with a few accessories I got for the 360, they came out to be around the same price and I get more with the PS3 without getting extra stuff ( you could say you got no choice)
There are more and better games for the 360 ATM
 
For media capabilities, the Playstation 3 is the best option. The Blu-Ray playback is stunning. It's still lacking as a gaming console.

Exactly... which is why I disagree with the suggestion that the fee keeps these idiots out. I play PC games as well, and my online game of choice is Counter Strike. I can't even remember when I first started playing it (perhaps 2000), and I still play it to this day. I can honestly say that in 6 months of playing Halo 2 I've had more matches with assholes then I ever did with Counter Strike, in nearly 7 years of gaming.

Experiences vary, obviously, and I'm sure there's plenty of PC games that beat Halo 2, when it comes to jerks online :) They're pretty much everywhere though.

Dude... it was brought up by someone supporting the 360 saying that they liked paying for XBL because it kept out those people.

As you and others have said, this isn't the case...

I agree that XBL is a superior service at this point, but I HATE paying for things like that. I will never pay monthly fees for something like that. I won't do the MMO's you have to pay for and I won't pay for XBL or a similar service. If Sony decided to make people pay for their service before I got a PS3 I wouldn't get one.
 
Honestly it depends on what exactly you're trying to get. if you have a htpc, then id say get a 360/add-on. you can use ur 360 as an extender, used the addon on ur htpc if needbe, and have a great game console. the 360 addon doesnt support any of the new audio codecs, so ur stuck with just dolby digital

w/o a htpc and a hd tuner, the 360 is pretty much in the same league as the ps3. in regards to next gen dvds, the ps3 is the best as far as hardware goes. it supports truehd, and prolly will have dts hd ma soon enough. bluray seems to be dominating, but who knows whatll happen in the next couple months.

for games, 360 all the way. the ps3 does have some really good games coming down the line. white knight story, and games like brave arms, chain limit, and second season 01; currently the 360 catalog is beating the ps3 ass somethin fierce.

the ps3 could be used as a media center w/ linux, but with my limited testing, mce spanks its 10000000x over...

its a hard choice. bluray is picking up, but hd-dvd isnt going anywhere anytime soon. u could get the 360 now, then get a ps3 when you save up more money or after a price drop. save 25/mo and u can get 1 this time next year (and some decent games will be out be then 2).

To be honest, we're never going to be free of griefers in online games. It just isn't going to happen. I've been playing online for a long time and I've yet to find an online game that didn't have its fair share of assholes.

Xbox Live makes it easy to join friends/family, which is one way to circumvent the bane of pubs. There is no way to filter out all the "ZOMG I PWNED JOO *insertracistinsulthere*" as long as the internet allows people to remain completely anonymous.

Voice recognition will advance and hopefully become the status quo for seeding the bad people. Until then, we're just going to have to deal.

The PS3's game library is comparable to where X360's was at this point in its life.
(6 months after release)

Of course at this point in time (early 2007) the # of good X360 games available is further along due to an earlier release. IMO the depth of their respective game libraries will likely be tied by the end of next year.

I agree paying a monthly fee for XBL sucks. That's why I pay the yearly fee instead. I can see not wanting to pay 15 bux a month to play a single game, but 50 bux per YEAR to play EVERY game the XBOX 360 has? Plenty worth it to me unless you only have 1 game. Then maybe not. Personally I play alot of online multiplayer games so XBL for 50 bux a year is totally worth it to me.

By having people pay for XBL, they have the money to constantly make upgrades and updates to the service and to the servers. Always adding more content and whatnot. Personally, I can't find that any console online service is anywhere near as good as a PC online gaming experience can provide. For example, in Call of Duty 2 on the PC, I simply won't join servers where I have higher than an 80ms ping. But on XBL, it throws you into whatever server it thinks best for you. Then you can in the game and find out you have a 250ms ping and everyone else does too. Kinda sucks. Though it's sort of compensated for in Call of Duty 2 by having a "shoot where they were when you saw them, not where you think they are going to be to compensate for lag" thing going on. On the PC version for example, you have to lead your shots to compensate for any lag there might be.
For XBL, this is not the case for every game though. FEAR and Prey for example are always laggy for me and I'm always having to lead my shots by like a quarter of a second or better to hit anything. Pretty ghey. If PS3's online service is less laggy, the hoorah for it. I can say for certain that trying to play a game online with the PS2 was horrendous. For now, I'll continue to play on XBL.
 
I'm lost as to how the PS3 is a better media machine. Its better at playing Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray isn't exclusive to the PS3, but its probably the best Blu-Ray bargain out there right now.
 
Does the PS3 still have problems with displaying movies in 1080i?
