Need Help Choosing Processor

I was recently budgeted funds to replace 15 of our 20 workstations in our main office at the University (the remaining 5 were replaced last year). The only guideline is they need to be OptiPlex GX620's, and if I go with a straight P4 I have to choose the 3.4ghz processor. When looking at the configuration options, I see that I can either go with the 3.4, or I can a Pentium D 3ghz for the same price (few bucks less actually). The head of computing said it's up to me with what I want, so I'm asking here. The machines will be used for day-to-day receptionist activities (word, powerpoint, access and visio), and two will be used for Rails development. Any input as to the better processor would be appreciated.

Either of those processors will be more than enough. As long as the systems have at least 512mb of ram they will be fine.
 
I figured that either would cut it....they will have a gig of ram. They will be in place for 4 years, and will be running Vista (if it's ever released), so I guess I'm wondering if one processor would be better than the other once that happens. I don't think it's going to make a serious difference one way or the other, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask.
 
I'd go with the pentium D. Dual core for less than the single core sounds like a great idea, especially since that 400mhz will never be missed. I think dual core is the way to go if they're going to be in place for 4 years...hopefully things will be decently multithreaded by then.
 
The Pentium D will give you some extra oomph when programs start to become more multi-thread friendly and it will make a much nicer computing experience for the employees, id definately go with that vs. the 3.4ghz p4 if it were my choice.
