I'm thinking of replacing my E4300 (running at 2.8GHz) with one of the following. Either the E6550 ($180), E6750 ($200) or the Q6600 ($300). From what I've seen there's no real advantage to the quad cores yet. I was leaning towards the E6750 but wouldn't mind a second opinion. Thanks.

I've noticed with quads, that if there is a prog you can run multiple instances of, having the extra cores is quite useful. I've loaded up all 4 cores while encoding videos core 1 and 2 100%, core 3 and 4 90% and still had plenty of power to use a browser, listen to an mp3 or watch a movie stutter free...

Crysis also seems to use 4 cores as well, I've found all 4 being used (albeit, underutilized) each hovering around 30-40%...

I'd also go quad simply because they are damn fine overclockers.... see sig for my air cooling wonder...

Thanks for the info. Do you think that I'd be able to get a better OC out of the 6750 or the Q6600? Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a great mo-bo so I'll be running an ASUS P5N-E SLI

The Q6600 can be had for less than $300. I paid $255 + ship from ncixus a couple weeks for a G0. It is down to $251 now but doesn't look to be guaranteed G0 any more.

whats your HDD setup? Cuz its not "bottlenecked" at that point, its choked.

I'm pretty sure most of the B6's have worked their way out of the pipe at this point.

and uhh, yeah, my votes for the E6550. A friend of mine bought an E6850 just as the Q6600 comes out, and he manages 3.8GHz for his overclock, then he sees people regularly hitting 3.5 and 3.6 on their Q6600s, pissed off because he didnt get one. In all fairness, in most benchmarks, the 3.8GHz will outperform the quad core. If your running one thread the core amount is moot, so the one thread looks at it like this: 1 proc at 3.8 GHz vs 1 proc at 3.6Ghz. Performance allocates itself accordingly.

The dual core will overclock, and if the B6's are still rampent, then theres a change you'll get one and thats just not fun.

Thanks for the info. I ended up going with the E6750, Asus P5N-E SLI, 4GB kit of ocz gold ddr-2 800mhz and an 8800 GT Superclocked. For some reason I can't the cpu to post past 3.2GHz. Right now the FSB is at 1600MHz and my ram is running unlinked at 800MHz. I have the vcore at 1.43 and the NB at 1.49. I tried setting the FSB anywhere from 1625 to 1700 but the board will not post at those frequencies. Any ideas?
