need help changing mobo

I have an old iwill xp333, and the built in sound card doesnt work, and it starting to shut off on me. i went out and bought a new asus a7n8x. i also bought windows xp, to replace windows 2000. now when i boot up, the old win2000 wont start up, but when i try to install winxp from the cd, it locks up during install. i also tried installing win200 over again but a screen comes up with errors. i have tried 2 diffrent hardrives and i still cant do a format or install. can anyone give me some ideas i can try next?
 
I'm assuming you've installed the new mobo.
Re-install the old one, then try to install XP. If this is successful, then put the new mobo in, and see what that does.
 
XP is better than the rest for handling mobo swaps, but nothing beats a format/fresh install.
 
Does any of the hardware in your signature have any involvement here? It would be helpful to know exactly what hardware you are dealing with and having a problems. Were any of the error codes around long enough to get a good look at them? It might help narrow down what you're dealing with. Did you try to switch out mobos and hope W2K would figure it all out? Did you try to then install XP over a confused W2K? I hope you have your data backed up. If so you maywant to try to wipe the drive and do a clean install of XP. You might want to get in and check your CMOS settings to make sure everything is where it should be then try the fresh install.
 
this is my old pc, it currently has the iwill xp333 mobo. amd xp2100, 512 ddr ram , and a WD 120 gig drive and a cdr liteon 52x.
I tried installing win xp, and it reformated just fine and installed, but when i switch over i get an error at the xp load screen and will not go into safe mode.
 
well i tried it again today and i finnaly got an error message, its says IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, the error codes are diffrent each time.

i have disabled all the extra stuff like the onboard sound, nic, a firewire.

i have tried pulling all the cd drives and changed them and switched out the ram, still nothing,
