Ok here's the deal, I purchased a BFG 6800oc to use in my KV8-pro with a Via K8T800 Pro.

Problem is, the system would only stay stable if I ran the computer without video card drivers installed. Once I installed the Forceware drivers, the video card would either stop sending a signal to the screen after about 5 minutes of use in windows, or it would let me get through a loop of 3dmark05 and then stop sending a signal to the screen. After a minute or so of sitting with no signal, the computer would completely lock up (num lock key stopped responding). Once this lock up happened, after the restart, Windows would show the loading screen with the horizontally moving blue bar, and then just show a blank screen.

So I tried the card in another computer and all went well, so i assumed the problem was on my end.

So, I went out and bought a new motherboard at the recommendation of BFG's tech support, an Asus K8N-e Deluxe, which has an nForce 3 250gb chipset. However, I was having EXACTLY the same problem as before; Once the video card drivers are installed, screen starts going black, and Windows won't boot.

In both cases i'm able to boot into safe mode, remove the video card drivers, and then reinstall them (which i have tried in both normal and safe mode).

So pulled the video card back out and tried it in my friend's computer again thinking maybe somehow i just didn't test it long enough. Nope, still working fine in his computer. So i pulled my psu out and tried my psu in his computer, still not the problem. So i tried my computer with only the 6800, psu, motherboard, hard drive, floppy, and cpu fan plugged in, but thats still not doing it.

So I have no clue how to fix this, but I'm out a lot of money and I really need to resolve this. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it :)
 
holy crap thats a lot of work :eek: did you try some different drivers? www.guru3d.com has a good selection and has WHQL ones too. if it doesnt work try returning it to wherever you got it from and get a new one.
 
If you can (and your friend will let you), I would start swapping components from his machine to yours until you find the one that is causing the problem. Offhand, it looks like it's your PSU, memory, or CPU itself that is the problem. Also make sure all the BIOS settings are at their lowest settings.

BTW, I had a similar problem with the 6800OC on my system. The computer would boot only half the time. I returned the 6800OC thinking it was bad and picked up a 6800GT OC. That wouldn't boot at all. So I tried on a different machine and it worked great, so I ended up swapping motherboards with the other machine and it worked fine. My old motherboard was a Aopen AK77-8XN (KT400) and the new one is a Abit KV7 (KT600). I figured that the motherboard was not providing enough power to the AGP slot or something like that.

Definitely, put it in your friends system and swap components one at a time till you find it.
 
i have in fact installed the nforce drivers first (gart drivers included)

I've also tried virtually every driver version 6x.xx and 7x.xx i can find.

i'll try swapping shit around next...
 
u sure ur agp slot is workin properly? try to use another vcard and stick it in the agp slot to see if thats the problem. the first 2 things u should do when u got a problem like this is test ur vcard then ur slot u used with the card. u tested ur card. did u test ur slot? i am referring to ur first mobo and second one.
 
I've actually thrown a radeon 9800 back in there and it worked without a hitch. I've used the nforce drivers that came on the cd, the latest ones from asus, and the latest reference ones from nvidia so i don't think thats the problem. today i'll try to see if its the memory somehow hopefully not since i already dropped the cash on a new motherboard and there's no way i can afford to buy new memory too

hmm, you think its my psu even though used my power supply in my friend's computer?

i guess that'll be the next step somehow, although i doubt he'll let me take his psu for a couple hours lol

its a thermaltake silent purepower 420 watts. its been pretty reliable and has gotten good reviews across the board, i don't think its that, but i really can't rule anything out at this point.
 
Alright I tried a new power supply, new memory, and the combination of new memory in my system, and unfortunately neither was the problem. Now i'm really confused because the by process of elimination, there's literally nothing that can be the problem. Part of me wants to take the card back and exchange it, but it worked fine in a different computer, even though with two motherboards, i couldn't make it work in any combination of my system.

any ideas?
 
did u try another vcard in ur agp slot? did it work? u sure ur agp slot works?
