I am having a major problem with my laptop. It is an Asus G73sw.

The issue i'm having is related to the display. To put it simply, its not working. Ill give some more detail and what iv already tried.
Ill make a log of what I did that i can remember.

1) laptop works
2) I took the laptop apart for cleaning
3) put it back together
4) worked fine for about 10 mins then the screen went off
5) restarted
6) worked for 5 mins then screen went blank
7) 5 and 6 repeated about 3 times then stopped working all together. **** one time is flashed off and on again with a nvidia kernel error ***
8) took apart laptop to check and make sure I didnt damage any cables, all looked fine
9) as I was putting it back together I hit the power button by mistake but when this happened the screen worked and shot the boot process. ( yes i know i shouldnt have the battery in while the comp is apart but i had it on while it was apart just to see )
10) I couldnt do anything because the keyboard still wasnt connected so i shut it down again
11) Fully put back together
12) Kept resetting for about an hour no more screen, however i did manage to get into windows, i could tell via the sound of log in, so the computer is booting, the screen is just not working. HDMI output did not work while I managed to get into windows.
13) Gave up for the night
14) Made a warranty ticket
15) Next day randomly turned lappy on, screen is working
16) in a long process of tedious rebooting because the comp froze / screen shuts off i managed to get the video drivers un-installed and re-installed
17) after the reboot for drivers reinstalled the comp had to be rebooted about 5 times and now the display IS working and is currently working, for how long I do not know Im going to risk a restart now
18 ) restarting xD
19) no display so its gone again
20) windows did boot, know this via sounds again, no HDMI output
EDIT
21) 20 mins later restarted once, display is working, as is HDMI output
22) Lost it soon as I re enabled networking

also would like to add, i had the HDD from the laptop set up in my desktop and booted windows 3 times fine.

Edit,, Also going to add this in here because its become more prominent, the computer freezes/crashes alot with or without the display working, Im starting to learn to a RAM issue.

So Iv never had any issues with something like this EVER And i have no idea where to begin, is it driver issues or graphics, does this need to be fixed by Asus?

This situation really has me baffled because I can only blame drivers or maybe MBconsidering it goes from on-off for no reason.

Please help!!

I am Considering wiping my harddrive incase its a virus or something but i dont really want to do that incase i send it off to be fixed.

Also read all my post in this thread they contain more info

You take a laptop apart to clean it and you are blaming drivers? It sounds to me like you damaged a connection somewhere during the cleaning and that's the reason why you are having random problems.
 
This is not a software problem, you definitely did something wrong.

You need to make sure that the monitor plug is connected. You probably knocked it loose or did not reconnect it properly. If it is not that then you probably messed up something else. However, if anything looks like physical damage inside, Asus probably will not honor the warranty.

And what the hell were you thinking putting the battery in when you had it taken apart? that is a really good way to screw something up.
 
I blamed damaging a cable too, but the fact that it randomly choose to work perfectly and then stop working and restart without even being touched therefore not moving anything inside is kinda werid.

Edit, I should also mention, the first time I "took" it apart i only have the memory/HHD part open and the keyboard open, not dissconnected and decided to stop there cause its wasnt as simple as my last laptop. This is when the screen acted up, so nothing related to the display was even touched when this happened first. No even close to being touched.

Also, there was no sticker to remove saying this voids warrenty anywhere so the loss of warrenty can be argued to some extent, been there before.
 
Like i said a cable frayed cable or bad connect would work perfecterly or not at all, it should cause a flicker effect should it not? also like i said, when the display isnt working neither is the video outputs for external monitors.

Another thing to add, cause i keep forgetting things, the heatsinks / motherboard was never taken apart / removed

And one more thing I just noticed this, when the computer boots and the display is working, but 5 mins later it goes off the computer crashes and reboots like 5 seconds later, also it has froze in process of booting a few times, this is starting to look more and more like a ram thing :/

Edit again, one more thing to add as for taking it apart, there are ram slots on each side of the MB and to access the back ones you must take it apart as much as I did so I cannot see that voiding warranty, especially since one of them is empty xD
 
Another thing to add, as this just happened, started in safe mode, display worked, computer froze
 
This may sound stupid, but check the memory.

My desktop was doing this as well. I booted with one stick of memory and its fine, no crashes/freezes/monitor shutting off.
 
Doesnt sound stupid at all, im leaning that way myself, iv tried one stick however ill have to wait tomorrow to try and take out the other stick of ram since it is on the other side of them MB :(
 
A laptop is a tricky thing. And from what you have described we only get part of the picture. What the unknown is, what were you cleaning the laptop with? Any liquid or spray cleaners involved? All laptops that I have worked on have a super thin cable for the keyboard and the monitor. Having taken your keyboard out you probably know exactly what I am talking about. That thin cable inserts into a connector which then has a locking mechanism on it when you push down on it holding the cable in place. If by chance when you were pulling or pushing that keyboard around there is a chance (slight as it may be) that you loosened the LCD cable.

However from what you describe with the random crashing etc.. and the only that changed was you taking it apart to clean it out. I would assume that you got some cleaner down into the bowels of your laptop and with the battery inserted tried turning it one soon afterwords to have the issues that you are facing.

In other words this one will need a trip back to Asus for repair. Some lessons are more expensive than others. I know I have had my share.

What was your procedure for cleaning the laptop?
 
1.When the screen is working, go to bios and leave it sit. I want to see if it crashes or shuts off doing nothing.

2.Does the laptop have a physical switch to turn the screen off when closed? Play with it if it does. If its broken remove/replace it.

3.When the screen goes blank, can you use a flashlight to see what was on the screen? If so its the internal power inverter for the lcd back light. This is typically separate from the motherboard, under the lcd Bessel. Check its cable first before replacement.

4.Crashes may be a result of start up reboots.

Ok let me describe this better I took the back plate off and the keyboard off with intention of cleaning it, then got lazy, ( noticed EVERYTHING had to come apart to clean out the heat sinks, cause that was my intention ) So no cleaning was actually done, upon clicking the keyboard back in place and the back plate the crashes / screen problems arose. I took it apart again thinking i may of damaged a cable but they are intact. ( I work as an electrician so I have some knowledge about wires :p ) upon taking it apart and inspecting the cable they were fine, so i put it back together. the problem was still the same as before so I definably didn't do more damage. Asus support has been talking to me and i tried there steps with no success so i set up an RMA ticket.

As i said earlier I strongly feel this is a RAM issue .

By back plate i just mean the back plastic of the case.

1. Freezes in bios when i can get in there, after a few mins

2. It has a function on the keyboard for the display, which works fine when i get into windows, however stops working when display goes off/ freezes

3. No back light is on when the display goes

4. the computer still starts perfectly and doesn't ask for a restore when it does work
 
would like to thank everyone with the helpful input so far, minus the people who just said, lol u broke it, dumb ass.... im really sure its the ram, but since it still has warranty ill just send it off. Mainly because the second ram chip is on the backside of the motherboard and taking it to see means it gotta come apart again xD

also would like to add, im not going to deny I damaged it, however it feels like coincidence. This is not my first time taking apart a laptop, iv been doing it on past laptops so id say iv done it about 20 - 30 over the past 4 years.
