just built a new computer:

GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3
i5-2500k
rip jaws 16gb 1600
antec hcg 620w

so i assembled everything and i inserted a hard drive and even formatted it with a new o.s. I tried booting it up with it as the priority but it cant get past the bios screen. Any ideas?

can you be more specific?

what is the actual squence of event u r seeing?

I'm going to assume you installed a windows OS. If that's the case, when you are booting up the computer hit F8 as if you're going into Safe Mode. Instead of doing safe mode, select VGA mode or Low-Resolution Video. If that still doesn't work, stick a video card in it.

Sounds like your BSOD'ing before you get anywhere. You should be able to "disable automatic restart" at the same F8 screen. Then you'll have a real error message to work with.

stuck a video card in it, upgraded my bios to f4, changed my "init display first" to pcie x16 (was originally onboard). No luck.

i cant even get into an f8 screen. All i have is tab to a post screen but it brings me back to the bios screen asap

Try disconnecting the hard drive. This will tell you whether the issue is related to that or not. If you've already completed the OS install then this is probably not the case, but it's something to try. I would also relax the speed/timing of your RAM for testing. You could also try any number of live enviroments booting from CD, there are plenty of linux based ones out there that have built in hardware testing utilities.

**edit** Also, disconnect/remove EVERYTHING other than the mobo, 1 stick of ram, CPU and HDD. If it fires up, then reinstall everything else one piece at a time until it fails, then you know it's the last piece you put in.

damn this is bumming me out. I got this computer for cheap and expected it to work flawlessly after all the connections.

question: what if my sata hd is old? do i possibly need a new sata hard drive?

edit: nvm sata is compatible. yikes. i plugged the hard drive into the old computer and it booted up just fine...

I'll just throw this out fwiw
Some folks are installing their Win 7 X64 on a fresh or wiped drive as a GPT drive, not knowing it
Others are installing Win 7 X64 on a MBR drive and have the UEFI HDD icon first in HDD boot order, plain MBR drive second
Now indows will install complete to a tuna fish can, but after first FRESH full boot, the icons will be wrong and will not allow boot

The second thing is the 1600 RAM
Time and time again new users find out the hard way any RAM thats over 1333 should be set as XMP in bios - instead of all those
other stickers, thats what ASUS should sticker on the RAM slots

So, I would need a F12 EZ page screenshot (to USB stick fat32)

Edit:
Disregard, this is Gigabyte, not ASUS. Oooops.
Faked me out - lol

is this a new os install? or did you jjust move the HD from the old computer to the new one wit hthe same OS install?

since u said the drive boots fine in the old machine, i have a feeling you just moved the drive.

thats a no-no

what OS is it?

youll need to run sysprep on the old machine 1st

originally i tried to use the same hd from the old computer, that didn't work. I then proceeded to install the same os on the same hd but that didnt boot. So i took the hard drive(fresh install from new pc) and tried it in the old pc and that worked. i'm trying to be least confusing as possible lol. its windows 7 ultimate x64

lol

since you clearly had no problem installing the OS, im going ot assume there is a driver problem somewehre.

did you use AHCI or IDE mode when you installed the OS?

check the bios to mkae sure the mode you installed in is the one set.

lastly, stick the OS CD back in, boot from it, and do a repair install. that should completely reset the drivers for the hardware without having to do a full new install.

i think its in IDE. The only different thing i did was use a shitty graphics card as my int display option. I then re-installed the os on the same hard drive. I'm hoping this will stick....forever

ahh crap. so i installed it but didnt format the whole drive. i still have my old windows in here. What can i do?

Start over. Boot from Windows DVD, delete all partitions on the hard drive, select unpartioned space as the install location and let it do the rest.

i would also grab the cd form the mobo and get the AHCI drivers instaled with F6 when it asks, there is a significant increase in performance. Switch the bios first though.

its a pain in the ass to do it after windows is installed

change bios mode to ahci 1st, boot the OS cd.

it should install the generic ms AHCI drivers.

scratch what i said earlier about f6, i forgot about the MS ones...

when you install the IRST pack in windows,it will replace the MS ones wiht intel ones.

that means the CD isnt booting properly

check the boot order and make sure the CD is 1st

sometimes there is a message "hit any key to boot from cd"

make sue you hit something.

what bsod?

at what point does it occur?

whats the error number and the module?

blue screen of death

edit: i think one of my ram sticks is acting up. gonna install with one stick and then run a test on all of them.

ok,

but whats the BSOD error number? and the module?

if you are running your mem at 1600, drop it to 1333 fro the intstall.

oops i apologize. I misread your comment. So i installed with 1 stick 4gb 1600 ram. I'm going to slowly add my ram to see if i get the bsod. I guess by trial and error, ill see which stick is faulty. I'll make sure to write down the number and module when i do see it again. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH! i'm just excited i got it up and running. cheers!

originally i tried to use the same hd from the old computer, that didn't work

Without reformatting it first? Very bad idea.

Try running memtest86+ from a flash drive and let it test all the RAM (yes, connect all the RAM you originally intended to use).

you can reuse the installation without issue, but you need to use sysprep to strip all the drivers

I upgraded mobo/cpu/ram/gpu and did not have to reinstall windows 7 on my SSD. I just plugged it in, it booted. Might have to do with the fact i upgraded from a p45 to a z68. Dunno. So it can be done. Runs like a champ.

not a particulariily good idea. Too many pieces of drivers booting around that may cause you issues down the road..

Windows 7 is much better at naked migration, but its always better to run sysprep

so i got it running but just now when i had to restart to authorize windows 7, i cant seem to get back in. I have no idea what is going on. This is just baffling me. I just get the the "loading operating system" screen and then it goes to the bios again. Its an unrelenting cycle.
