I'm posting this plea for help on a few forums, including [H] and Reddit trying to find someone who can help me with a graphical/system error I'm having. I'm on the verge of skinning myself alive with how maddening this issue is, so ANY help would be appreciated.

Back story: I'm trying to run a dual monitor setup with mis-matching monitors. I have a Dell 19" and an HP LP3065 30" (Link). A friend couldnt use the 30in on his Mac -he thought the Mac didnt have DVI-D input/output- so he gave it to me. The 19 is analog, the 30 has 3x DVI-D inputs only.

I tried to use the 30in alone when my system was running an Nvidia 8600 (cheapo) GPU (Link). I plugged in the monitor, powered on and the splash screen and everything following was artifacted by green pixels/dots and both horizontal and vertical green lines. I assumed this was failure on the GPU's part as it was old, probably running down on its last leg and with nowhere near the memory to run such a monitor. I didn't think much of it except that I need a better GPU.

Since then I have upgraded my case (Antec 300) and PSU (Thermaltake 650) in a bid to prepare my PC for a new GPU.

For Christmas 2010 my friend gives me a 9800 GT reference design (Link) when he upgrades his PC. I replace my 8600 with this much more powerful card (ancient though it is/was) and I get the same artifacting with the 30" monitor. I thought theres no reason it should do it on this card, my friend ran his PC on his tv with it. I update everything with the new card and try to run the monitor alone. Same artifacting. The issue stops if I half the res to 1280x800, but of course I want the max resolution.

NOW, yesterday I recieved the Radeon HD 6950 (Link) I ordered, dropped it into the system, replaced the nvidia drivers with ATI, re-updated everything and plugged the 2 monitors in, fully expecting magic to happen. Of course, it didn't, and the monitor still artifacts at resolutions above 1280x800 and has weird junk happen to it if i pair it with the 19in. Switching the DVI-I ports the 30 in still gets artifacts, the 19 in isn't even detected.

I have updated every Nvidia driver, cpu driver, monitor driver, used UltraMon, literally everything I could think of to get this thing first to display 2560x1600 resolution and sedondly to add the 19in, to no avail. In fact, I've formatted my HDD 3-4 times now because when I change the res to 25/16 with Display Properties, it throws a run.dll error and forces restart, then blue screens after loading windows. It loops this. It also does this when I try to update mobo drivers. In Nvidia control and ATI CCC nothing is different; if I force it to 25x16 it just artifacts or turns off completely. If I try to run both monitors, it forces the 30in off again and borks the colors on my 19. This has been a nightmare trying to deal with this monitor, but it was free and I want it to work. So much junk has gone wrong I'm tearin out my hair here.

Points of interest:
- Mismatched 30 + 19 in monitors
- Artifacting on 30in when paired with 19.
- Artifacting on 30 alone unless below 1280x800 res.
- Drivers/CCC Up to date.
- HP LP3065 - 3x DVI-D input
- Radeon HD 6950 - 2x DVI-I, Display port, Mini-HDM output

TL;DR My 30in monitor is artifacting with a HD 6950 powering it, please help!
 
Well first off, I updated your thread title "PLEASE HELP!" is more likely to get you flamed than helped. ;)

Secondly, that's a pretty good friend to give you a free 30" display. It honestly sounds like the monitor just isn't functioning, but have you tried using a different cable? You never know and they're pretty cheap. Can you hook it up to a laptop or something to test it out? Oh, and that 8600 shouldn't have had any problems pushing that resolution for regular desktop use.

So basically:

-Find some other PC to hook it up to, anything remotely modern should be able to push that resolution for desktop testing. If it still does it, try a new cable (make sure it's DVI-D), and if it still does it....you have a bad display. Have you checked to see if it's in warranty status?

Could you check two things first, before any troubleshooting?

1: The cable you are using, is it dual link DVI or single link DVI?
2. What port are you connecting the cable to on the 6950? If I remember correctly, those cards came with a single link dvi and a dual link dvi instead of two dual link dvi ports.
 
@Oldie - My apologies about the title, going a little insane here.

Mike is a good friend though, he charged the monior to his work card, which I'm sure is illegale but he didn't seem to care. When he found out he couldn't use it, just asked if I wanted it :D I have used another cable other than the one that came with the monitor, a Geek Squad one from Best Buy. Secondly I figured as much about the GPUs being able to use that resolution for just browsing, but I wasn't sure. I will test on laptop I'm repairing for a friend to see about the cables though. I'm 99% certain its not a GPU issue as I've now used 3 different GPUs from 3 different manufacturers.

@ Tamlin - 1. It is a Dual Link DVI-D, as described on the box for it as well as matching this picture.

2. I'm plugging it into the DVI-I slot on the 6950 next to the HDMI port, NOT next to the exhaust port.

DVI cable bandwidth. Try a different cable. Both my DVI-I cables artifacted on my 3007WFP (unscalar like the HP 30"), but one was vastly superior to the other.
 
I'll look around for a better quality cable, I was beginning to fear there was some sort of compatibility issue with DVI-D and DVI-I or something. So I'll check back here for some more advice but I'll see about getting a higher quality cable too.

There are also issues with monitor detection with this model that were reoccuring on the earlier cards I had used i.e. never allowing the HP to be the primary monitor, even if its the only one plugged in, in either slot. Windows recognizes there are 2 mintors, but greys out the Number 1 position in display properties, and still lists both as being the LP3065, but if I switch them or disable Number 2, or select No 1 as "Use as primary" the screen just blacks out and reverts back because I didnt confirm my selection. This is not the case with the 19in. It also has a second display option in Display Props but it is listed as being the No 1 monitor, with 2 greyed out. If I plug in both, it REALLY gets weird, with the picture distorting and colors breaking when I try to force the HP to be 1. With it being 2 its alright, but still same artifacting over 1280x800, plus the desktop "start" bar is on the 19. If you guys know a solution that'd be wonderful and any more details you require please ask away.
 
Appreciate the links, looking at that cable as well as an HDMI -> DVI-D adapter. While I'd prefer the cable, it seems like theres no HDMI -> dual-link DVI-D cables, only adapters.
 
correct, there's no real need, when you can just use that adapter, and then a normal cable of the appropriate type.
 
Yup, bought a new DL DVI-D tonight, going to use HDMI -> VGA + DL DVI-D adaptor if that doesn't work too. Actually, at that point, I should RMA the monitor -.-
 
Working on that step now, as buying a new, better quality, DVI-D cable did nothing. Same artifacting. I wish there was a way to test this on another monitor thats 30" since I REALLY hate to have to RMA it. Especially since I didn't buy it -.-
