need help 9700pro Vs. 9600

ok, i've been out of the computer scene for a yr or so, so imma need some help, this guy offered me this trade, my 128mb Radeon 9700 Pro for his 256mb Radeon 9600 ??

i know if i make the trade, i'll be going from 8 pipelines on the 97 to 4 on the 96 and the core clock will go down also, but the 9600 has double the ram and DDR ram....i think the 9700 didn't have ddr, but i might be wrong, so i need your help. thanks ahead of time....

the 9700pro has ddr ram. 256MB is not really necessary for a 9600 or 9700 series card, i would keep your 9700p.

dude, my radeon 9000 Pro has DDR Ram. Im pretty sure my Radeon 7000Pro PCI has DDR Ram.

and going from 8 pipes to 4 and adding 256MB of slower ram isnt going to help anything.
 
dont do it, you have a head and shoulders class above him with that card. the 256 MB of ram was more for marketing than anything else.
 
9700p > 9600 (even an XT)

9700pro have a 256bit bus, whereas the 9600's have a 128bit bus (if I'm not mistaken). Definatley NOT a good trade up.

The 9600 is, as everyone has said, a big downgrade in performance from your current 9700 Pro. Factor in the fact that it's a 9600 non-Pro and non-XT, and you'll really get ripped off. And the extra 128MB of memory does nothing at all whatsoever to improve the performance of that 9600np - and any games that really need any of that extra graphics memory will seriously overtax that 9600np GPU itself.

And I can guess the reason why that guy wants a trade in the first place:
He is getting sick of the slow performance that he's been getting from that 256MB 9600np to begin with. Well, you should tell him to get (and pay for) his own upgrade card, unless you're planning to upgrade your videocard yourself. And a 256MB 9600np, as we've said, is actually a downgrade (not an upgrade).
 
thanks for the advice guys, btw, he has a 9600 XT ....i confused myself... i was thinking the 9600 was the 9800......and i was like, let me check the specs to make sure, glad i did.....
 
In this case, it still may not be worth the performance drop. The 9600XT, even with 256MB, comes in at roughly the same level of performance as a (stock) 9500 Pro.
 
looks like this guy who is offering up the trade is trying to dupe you man. stick with the 97 imho
