I'm going to be using an old dual P3 550 server as a media server. I plan to put EVMS on it and run a software RAID-5 array. I plan to use 4 SATA drives and a PCI SATA controller. It will also have a PCI wireless card. My goal is to run this with linux and have it secure so firewall programs will probably be needed. I've toiled with Linux before, but would definitely still consider myself a beginner. Can anyone give any recommendations?
I know that there are images out there for HTPC versions of Linux. Are there any images for this kind of application? Also, the machine has on board SCSI RAID. I would like to either setup the OS on 2 RAID-1 SCSI 9.1G 10k drives or put it on 4 of them in a RAID 1+0 setup. The latter is stupid and not really needed but it might be fun to figure out.
