Hey, guys. I've been trying to format my maxtor 40gb 7200rpm HDD. When I type "format c: /q" or even "format c:", the DOS prompt says "format not supported on drive c: format terminated." Now I don't know what the hell to do to get this thing formatted.
There seems to be some corrupt sectors on the hard drive. It started clicking occasionally when I was sitting on my computer a couple of weeks ago. The day came when the hard drive wouldn't even boot into windows in any mode. Since the hard drive was making noticeable noises before this happened, I am guessing that there is a possibility that the drive just died. The only reason that I doubt this is because I am still able to access it as a slave drive on a seperate computer that I have. I backed up all of my information this way.
Also, when I start the computer with the boot disk in it, the DOS prompt says "Windows has detected an invalid FAT or FAT32 partition. Yadda yadda yadda." It suggests that I try running FDISK. I did that and deleted the main partition to try to bypass that problem, but it didn't help any and i'm still not able to format. The boot disk also suggested getting a DOS virus scanner because it said that some viri cause the c: drive to not be recognized or something. I'm thinking that I might have a virus and I need to get rid of it before I format?
Anyhow, as you can tell my experience with this is very meager. I've only formatted one or two drives before. If you could help me in any way, i'd appreciate it very much. Any ideas as to where I can get a free floppy disk virus scanner for DOS? Once again, thanks for responses in advance... if you have any questions, let me know.
