Need For Speed Shift 2 Spring 2011

I also really liked the first Shift. It had its issues, of course, but Slightly Mad did a good job and hopefully they learned from the issues of the first game and will tweak the mechanics of the game a bit to make it better.

They created a new engine for Shift 2, which surprises me a lot since the first engine was already modern enough - that business about blurring out the cockpit when you reach a dizzying speed in order to simulate how you, as a driver, would begin to focus on the road ahead, was ground breaking stuff. Not having that effect in other driving games made it feel like something was missing.

I would like the cars to feel a little less like hovercrafts though. As much as I enjoyed the game, I never quite felt the handling was correct.

Wow, Hot Pursuit is just coming out today and they're already talking about Shift 2 in a few months? I'm not complaining but that seems to be pushing it. Personally, I'm ready for Grid 2 since the original Shift looked like a poor man's version of it!

Another game where the console versions will get content that the pc version wont...meh.

Well, Hot Pursuit is such a different game from Shift & Shift 2 that it is only related by the Need For Speed name. Little else is similar (including the studios developing them). I'd look at them as two completely different series, and as such, it's not that odd that the two are coming out mere months apart. Need For Speed does this kind of thing a lot. Most of their monikers denote completely different types of games, with a few exceptions (Most Wanted was basically Underground 3).

Interesting...I quite liked Shift, but given how poorly is sold I never expected it to receive a sequel. Glad to hear it!

Fool me once...

I was so excited for Shift, there was every reason to assume it would be awesome given the developer's history. The physics were so sloppy and vague compared to what they had promised months prior, and of course there was the fact that your car would literally bounce off the track if pushed a little bit. It's going to take some serious convincing to get me to bite on this one.

Funny, I hated that effect and turned it off almost immediately, along with HDR and bloom effects. I can focus on the track quite alright myself without the game narrowing my vision for me.

Anyway, I sort of liked Shift, good graphics, reasonable but not quite right physics. Didn't enjoy it enough to play through the whole thing though... I'll be interested in seeing what Shift 2 is like.

Interesting. I dont like the look of helmet cam, RACE has something similar for open wheelers and I dont like it there either. Hopefully we can turn it off.

If they improve the physics it could be a great game though. I think Shift 1 has the best looking cockpits of any game around (GT5 looks nice, but you can't beat the PC version of Shift running at 1920x1080).

I tried the demo for Shift, and I didn't like it. One track I came in 1st place even though I crashed into everything, and the other track I came in dead last after crashing into everything. I thought Shift was going to be different than the previous NFS's before it, but it's still undriveable to me. I have been playing racing games for past several years on the PC, so I thought maybe it was just the PC versions. So I got Hot Pursuit for the PS3. It's a little hard to drive too, but I kind of like this game. But whatever happened to the good ol' days? My favorite NFS is NFS 3 and the original Hot Pursuit. I could actually control the cars back then. I'm not sure what the makers of these games are going for now. Every driving game now I am side to side and slamming into just about everything. Seeing a curve coming is like Kryptonite to me. I don't know if they're going for realism now or what, but to me it's not working. I love playing Motorstorm on the PS3...the main reason is because I can control the freakin' vehicle!

Still, no racing game is as bad as Sega Rally Revo. I paid $20 for that piece of crap. Absolutely undriveable. It's like a total disconnect from the car on the screen and the controller.
