Need External Harddrive Advice

My dad is looking for an external harddrive to store a lot of his files on. He doesn't need much, maybe somewhere between a 20-40gb(max) drive. What would his best bet be without spending much money but getting a drive that is dependable?
 
Well, you could take a known dependable drive and putting it in an external enclosure. You can find enclosures all over the place.

Will any 2.5" HDD fit into pretty much any case? I know it sounds like a dumb question, I just want to be sure.
 
You are best off with a 2.5" drive enclosure for a 2.5" drive.

Most 2.5" exernal drives get their power via the USB connection so dont need an external power supply.
You can fit a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" enclosure but you will need an adapter to convert between the connectors and to give you a power connector.
You will need to find a way to mount the drive too.
