Okay, I am getting a little bit tired of having to borrow someones digital camera and usually it's someone different every time. So I really don't take to much time ogling over the features and figuring them out. I have been "glancing" through them on newegg trying to find a good one. I'm thinking what am I doing I don't know jack about these things. Well, okay, I do know some. So I figured I would ask for help on finding one.

Well I do know the following:
The higher the megapixel the crisper the shot.
Go for optical zoom instead of Digital zoom.
Adjustable shutter speed. Faster for moving objects, capturing particles of a water droplet hitting the surface. or Slower to get more of a blur, like a waterfall running.

Okay. So I guess I would say I have about a $200 spending limit on a camera. I would prefer $150 so that I could spend the other $50 on getting a bigger memory stick for it, but I could get the memory stick later. With the above in mind I would like to get the most bang for my buck and I would also like a fairly compact one. I sometimes carry it in my pocket and that kind of gets unconformable.

Hopefully this isn't asking too much but it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for taking your time and helping me.
 
most anything over 8MP you cant really notice and megapixels is now becoming a marketing term like Ghz was for Intel, it is more now the quality of the CMOS or sensor that matters more, such as my 20D can take better pictures then most any 10MP camera below it, or 12MP.

i prefer Canon myself, their A series are nice or powershot camera's,
 
What I agree with McGuverment is on the MP question. I think anything under 6 MP myself. What size of a camera are you looking for. Do you want one you can slip in your pockect or, something that feels like a camera? You are correct that Digital zooms suck. But you also will want a camera with image stabilization, for macro or close-up work. Yeah you need something with some manual modes as well. Go to http://dpreview.com/ and see what is in your price range. Id read the user reviews myself.
 
I don't have a high need for an SLR and I know if i go with an ultra-compact camera I won't get a bunch of features. As for image stabilization; I don't know. I was at concert and the camera I had borrow had to that on. It would take forever to get a shot off and almost all of pictures came out blurry but that could have been I didn't take the time to learn the camera because I was only going to have it for that night.

I would also like to the ability to take sequence of shots so that I could get a bunch of pics while something is in motion.

Get one with Image Stability(one that does NOT just bump up the ISO).....
 
Id say the Canon is the better camera. The problem you will have with all P&Ses is they have lag time from time to focus to actually taking a picture. Sorry to tell you that. Some are better than others. But since I am strictly a Dslr shooter, I have no idea which are faster. Also on dpreview, I would read the user reviews.
