I'm looking for a higher power access point. I plan to mount a 10dbi omni antenna on it to get internet to 2 detatched buildings at one of our locations. I then plan to use some sort of cheaper access point at each building to accept the signal. One remote building will have 3 folks in it and the other will have 2.

I've done a bit of work with wireless networking, but never had to ask myself this question.. If I buy X brand of access point for the omni antenna, can I buy a different brand to use on each of the other ends?

I plan to get 2 Buffalo routers and 2 patch antennas for the remote buildings provided they will work with whatever higher power router I get for the central office.

Edit: The longest distance the signal will have to go is maybe 400ft. Could I be safe in getting a high power Buffalo router and slapping an outdoor omni antenna on top of it?

We use a D-LINK DWL 2100AP on each side, works great, the buildings are about 150 Yards apart. We push our entire network and phonesystem through it, never have had any problems.

I have built a wireless bridge using 2 9dbi patch antennas and whr-hp-54 buffalo routers. However, I am having to add a 3rd building into the mix on this project. I'm not too sure that the Buffalos will provide the juice I need with them only having a 10mW internal amp. Thus the need for 2 different brand of products. Here is an Engenius 400mw AP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833168010

I just need to ensure that this product will work with the 2 Buffalo routers i plan to have at the remote buildings.

400ft Line of Sight can easily be done with a Buffalo, or most any other so long you use a short run between the antenna, and AP. Heck, I use my laptop to connect to an AP that is over 300ft away, and non-LOS without trouble.
