ok, heres the thing... my graphics card is a POS, and ive been dealing with BFG for two fucking weaks trying to get a replacement (theyve had their heads up their asses about the whole thing...) and today, while playing fear, the fan on the card stopped, the monitors went black, and so i restarted. on bootup, the system wouldnt boot. fucking great i think, so i stick in my XP disk thinking ill run some disk checks and maybe a repair install.

i get to the disk format screen, THE ENTIRE FUCKING HARD DRIVE IS BLANK. i am fucking fuming right now. i need some a nice data recovery agent, all my music (which is backed up, the MP3's at lesat.. ill have to rerip the FLACs if i cant get them back) and my save games are on that disk, and whatever was on the desktop.

is there any way to just restore the disk to the way it was? i cant imagine much got damaged.. HELP ME PLEASEE!!

well i found "active partitoin recovery" online and all my stuff is still there, so thats a plus..

before i pay $30 for this program so it will actually restore my partitions, is there anything else that is free that will do the same job?

Knoppix. Free, nothing to install, just burn it to a CD, pop it in your busted box, and start browsing through directories. You should also be able to use the Windows CD to restore your installation, if you're really really good.

the MTF table is gone. you cannot browse partitions when no partitions exist to the OS.

all the data is still there, i was browsing through it with the active partition recovery software. makes me think that if the MTF table is rebuilt, windows should boot right up.

me hopes ice czar sees this thread soon...

edit: im gonna go head and get it. it looks like legit, good software. lots of great ratings.

GetDataBack generally works well for this type of situation. If the partition and MFT table is blown away you need something that will scan the drive looking for individual files to recover them.

sorry I missed it , but glad you got it all restored ;)

as far as root causes go
your sure its the video card?
whats powering all that?

a neopower480

i think it might have been a combination of the GT, the crash, and the NV IDE drivers. in teh end, i think it was ultimatly cuased by the card.

edit: The gt (yeah, i hooked it up again, im addicted to FEAR...) just did the kill fan and turn off monitors again, but the hdd is fine this time. its also done it before and been fine. i dunno what was so special about last night :(

well the crash alone can easily be responsible for the data corruption
but the root cause is whatever caused the crash

i 99% sure its the card. this is an RMA card, and the first card i had never did this to me. ive never had any card do this to me, its really weird. ill be gaming, the fan will cut off (blue LED goes out, so its quite apparant) and the monitors go away, the system hardlocks.

odd thing is htat it has only happened in FEAR. SS2 doesnt do it, Far Cry doesnt do it, HL2 doesnt do it. havent tried splintercell on it yet, but i should...
