Well after 4 years the speakers on my Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 Digital Desktop theatre appear to be dying. I could buy new computer speakers and shell out a couple hundred bucks, or I could utilize the home audio system I have sitting in my closet that I haven't hooked up since I got home from college. (It's a transition period ;) )

The system is a nice Onkyo home theatre setup that I got from Circuit City a few years back when I was working there and had the employee half-off discount. The receiver is high quality, has 2 digital coxial inputs and 2 optical inputs. My question is, how do I hook my computer to the receiver and still maintain 5.1 sound quality. My soundcard doesn't seem to have any sort of outputs to the receiver that I can find that would maintain 5.1 quality. I suppose I could use lineout but I am pretty sure I would lose the 5.1 The soundcard is a Creative Labs Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum.

Any ideas? Perhaps recommendations of a soundcard that you know would be able to hook into the receiver? My budger is around $200.
 
You *really* need to update your sound card...its really old and has very bad sound quality compared to cards you can get very cheaply nowadays. Since you are hooking up your sound card to 5.1 speakers that decode dolby digital 5.1, just get a hda mystique sound card and you'll be fine. That will give you digital 5.1 in games and dvds.
 
The HDA mistique 7.1 has both a digital coaxial and optical output on it. Plus it has DDL, so you can use one cable to get the surround sound.

From my understanding, other non DDL cards require the use of 3 cables which connect to the extension input on the receiver.

So I just connect the optical cable from the soundcard's opt out to the optical input on receiver? And then I'll have 5.1 Dolby sound? That's too easy!
 
Only if the card supports DDL which the HDA 7.1 mistique does.

Its just like connecting a CD player or DVD player to the receiver............... simple once you know how.

I have my Audigy2 ZS connected through digital coaxial, and because it does not have DDL I guess it can't send surround sound to the receiver.
