Ok braniacs, what do you suggest??

I'm slapping a system together for my buddy who just wants to surf the net, d/load and burn music, and just do school work on it. So far, this is what he gave me:

Case w/ 350w p/s and 2 usb ports up front.
80G HHD Ultra ATA
Soundblaster Live sound card
Ethernet card
52x cd-cd/rw
6+1 card reader w/2 usb ports
GeForce 400MX vid card

He wants to spend no more than $150 on a processor, mobo, and memory. What do you guys recommend i get from NewEgg to meet this criteria?

....remember, i need a mobo that will accept some usb plugins for his case and card reader. Post your shopping cart link here.

ummm... ebay? :D i can see the processor and mobo happening for under $150, but im not sure about the ram. does he care if its slow?

thats damn near impossible to do, cheap ass board, cpu, and like 256 ram is about $150 is gonna gget u.

Taking a look at:

ASUS A7V600-X mobo ($56)
Athlon XP 2200 proc ($69)
Kingston PC-2700 (128x2) ($52)
for a total of $177.

Very close to target......what do you think of components??

sounds like a nice box for school, music, and pron surfing :p. as long as its in his budget, you should go for it.

It's good for what he wants to do. He's not a gamer or a video editor, he just likes his music and surfing.

Thanks for all the input. We decided on the AMD parts and ordered them. Now the fun part...putting it all together.
