I am not too experienced with PSUs so I thought I'd seek out advice here.

I have an old Shuttle SD39P2 which needs a new power supply. Instead of buying an expensive manufacturer replacement, I've decided to buy an external PSU that I can use to power it and use for a future build.

So basically it needs to do a few things
- be at least 650w
- be compatible with the following connectors for the shuttle motherboard (through use of adapters or otherwise): 1x 8-pin Power connector for Motherboard, 1x 4-pin Power connector for CPU/Motherboard
- have at least 2 PCI 6 pin for possible higher end video cards

any recommendations? or am I asking for the impossible? I already did a search and im pretty clueless about this.

Most 650 watt power supplies come with two or more PCI-E 6-pin connections, those that don't are usually the cheap ones you want to avoid at all costs.

It is possible, provided you have the proper pinouts of the motherboard and CPU connections. You can use the connection from the old power supply, and modify the new power supply's motherboard connector to use the old connector. Like I said, however, you need the pinouts, so that you put the correct lines in the correct places. Ground to ground, 12v to 12v, etc. However, do this only if you're comfortable working with electronics. If you don't do things correctly, you risk burning out your motherboard, CPU, power supply, and anything else connected to the power supply.
