i want to have monitoring programs running in the background and be able to watch TV on another monitor while playing a game.( 1-3 monitors ) I figured a quad core and lots of memory would cover this nicely. Assign the game to 2 cores (if it can) and the TV /w other loads on the other cores.

Can I do all this like i think? or am i missing something?
 
Currently I only have HT processors... But I can say I haven't HEARD of being able to assign processes to run on specific cores in multiple core processors... Did you hear about doing this somewhere? If so, could you post a reference link so that I can enlighten myself?
 
same here man. I'm running an older ceder mill.

Well from what i thought, you could assign program tasks through task manager. I did a google search and didn't find much information on the subject. Kinda silly to have a quad core and not be able to have some control over it. Unless it works like a dam. 1 CPU fills then floods then next, ect.

Any knowledgeable intel guys please chime in.... please? :)

My observations with my own HyperThreaded processors lead me to beieve that they at least to work in this way, but assuming that there is no perfomance loss on a process that's occuring in a core that's almost at capacity vs. the performance of a process that's in a core at 15%, then there's no reason for it to NOT work like that.
 
More information would help me decide between an E8400 or Q9300. TV, DVR, gaming all at the same time would be wonderful. :D
 
You can set the CPU affinity in task manager. I'm not positive if you can set it to run on multiple cores or not, but I know for certain that you can assign a task to an individual core. The OS should do a decent job of allocating the load in any case, you shouldn't really have to set the affinity yourself - Vista is probably better at that than XP. I think a bigger issue is the graphics system you'd be using - could that handle outputting TV on one monitor with a game on another.

Yah i see what you mean. If the game is taking up a lot of the resources, how would the TV function. I'm unsure and going to have to experiment :) If i have to buy a 3rd card for just the TV, i'm ok with that.
