I have just bought an Abit IB9 mobo for a media center pc to go underneath my tv. I bought this board because it has passive cooling and I really like Abit. I need advice on which processor to purchase for this board. Obviously this needs an Intel proc, but an not sure which seriest to get. I was thinking about the 6300 because it is inexpensive and core 2 duo. Any thoughts why this is good or bad? Also, some advice for memory that is 1.8v compliant?

IMO I would get a Pentium D. Just checked Newegg and can get the 915 for 125. I know everyone is going to disagree with this but you said its a media center PC. You really dont need that much power and a PD will do just fine. But then again a E6300 isnt much more and if money isnt a problem go get the E6300 but a PD will do the task just fine and some money will be saved.

If it were me, I would get the 6300 because I like to feel up to date with technology :p

Better off with a Pentium Pro 180MHz and 32MB of EDO RAM and a Seagate 3.2GB HDD

The ABIT B9 is serious overkill for a media center PC, if it were me I would just get one of those cheap motherboard/CPU combinations from tiger direct for $100 total. Unabashed cheapskate that I am LOL :D

I would think that a media center PC would need a little bit more than that...

I havent built one soooo... I could be wrong

sarcasm, man.

I'd say go for some cheap pentium processor, just not celeron. They're all getting price cuts too so have fun!
