Im about to receive in the post an ASUS 6950 2gb dcii to run in crossfire when I occasionally game with my current 2GB radeon 6950.

I only have a corsair TX650M though.

PLlease could someone advise if I need larger PSU ith more connections to run both of these.

Also what cables do I need for the new GPU as Im buying it used?

thanks

If your Sandybridge is at stock clocks, you'll probably peak right around the600-650W range. And your PSU should do the job wattage wise for gaming.

Got a Crossfire ribbon cable? IIRC, those DCIIs require 6+8pin. You got a 6-pin and an 8-pin to spare?

thanks, yeh it is at stock clocks. Im going to be powering 6 17'' dell monitors in DVI, and maybe eventually twelve. Will the 650 suffice for 6 monitors?

also you got a link for the crossfire ribbon cable, I have no 6 or 8 pin cables, spare. Ill have to check my PSU what connections are still free.

cheers though. Im assuming by crossfire ribbon I can use one large cable for both GPUs?! Is that conventionally how croffsire works, or is that a case of using less inputs in the PSU.

Otherwise is crossfire possible using a separate cable on the dcii?

Im probably overcomplicating this .

http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards

the above link is a MSI forum article which says how much power different graphics card configurations require. for HD 6990 it says 750W with 45A on +12v rail. HD 6990 is HD 6970 CF at 830 Mhz and will draw power similar to HD 6950 CF.

http://www.corsair.com/enthusiast-s...tt-high-performance-modular-power-supply.html

What is very important is the amps on +12v rail . the Corsair TX650M has 54A on +12v rail. so you should have no issues. But for safety reasons do not overclock your HD 6950s.

the load power draw of a HD 6950 on a very power hungry core i7 965 CPU (125w) and an equally power hungry X58 chipset motherboard with triple channel RAM is 320w. Add another 200w for another HD 6950. that makes it 520w.

Your config is a power efficient core i7 2600k CPU with a relatively power efficient P67 motherboard. You will draw atleast 50w - 75w lesser. so effectively 450W - 475w. So you are well within safe limits. :)

cool thanks. Still I could do with a link to order these 6 pin 8 pin GPU connectors and knowing if Id just be better off on a crossfire ribbon cable ( '', or is that the same thing ) .

ok it seems as though I won't be getting a bridge connector http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-ATI-A...TV_Cards_TW&hash=item1c279a8138#ht_500wt_1156 ... from what I gather here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=20310012 ,I need one. does it need to be amd approved? ....Im about to google 'ribbon crossfire 6 8 pin cable' so I will edit this in a second.

so confused right now. do these bridges connect to something different to the 6 8 pin ports ,, then I have to connect to the 6 8 pin too?

6 pin and 8 pin are power connectors. The CF ribbon comes in every retail GPU by AMD/ATI. See something like this:

thats a 4 pin to PCI-E 6 pin power connector. you need to get two of those. your corsair TX650M comes with two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors. That will be used by the first 6950 for the second 6950 you need to connect these 4 pin connectors to your PSU and then you can connect the 6 Pin PCI-E power connector to your second graphics card. each 4 pin connector comes with two 4 pin connections. remember to connect both the 4 pin to different 4 pin power connectors in the corsair TX 650M. so totally you will have to connect four 4 pin connectors to get 2 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.

here is a crossfire card installation showing the crossfire cable
