Hello, I'm trying to access a network from a few hundred feet away and my notebook is having issues staying connected. What would be the best way to boost its signal strength?

I'm kind of wondering if it would be better to setup an antenna outside of my house and have it relay the signal back to my notebook.

Any advice on how to do this and what exactly I would need?

What you need is an AP you can put into bridge mode, then deploy a patch, or maybe a yagi antenna.
 
Alfa 36NH or the Rokland n3 is going to give you the best range with portability. You can pick both up for under 40 dollars and they come with a 5 and 9dBi antenna.
 
Okay, went with Astronomica's advice and bought an n3. It's been working quite well. I have it pointed through a crack in my window and am getting 57-60 PWR/RSSI or 4 bars in Windows 7. The 10mb connection has been surprisingly stable too, which is more important than speed.

I need some more advice on upgrading the antenna. The Rokland n3 apparently only has a 2db antenna, would upgrading the antenna to that Alfa 9db antenna help the connection at all (particularly with PWR/bars)? I'm under the impression that a bigger antenna only improves range... so maybe I need to go with a more directional antenna like a cantenna?
