I am getting my motherboard back from rma. It will house a Q6600 and 2-8800GTS. I have read several threads about the vm running 4 smps. However I didnt see anything bout running 2 video cards. Would it be better running one smp on windows and the 2 gpus. Or running multiple smp over the vm and then running the 2 gpus. If the latter one how many smp can I run and get the maximum output. Thanks
 
I'd run a VM with a linux SMP, then a windows SMP with the two other Vid cards.

But I will let the VM experts come in, this is outside my realm of experience.
 
The way to get the most PPD would be by running two Linux VMs, each using two cores and running the Linux SMP client, and running your two GPUs at the same time. Check out capreppy's VM guide to help you set things up :).
 
Agree with Zero82z. 2xGPU2 clients plus 2 Lin SMP Clients (either in a native Linux VM or a notfred's). On any quadcore 2xLin SMP will net you the most points. The 8800GTS will not need more than a few CPU cycles and the remaining can go to the SMP clients. This thread will get you up and running on 2 x notfred's. With a Q6600 @ 3.2 I am getting about 5400 PpD.

Thanks for the help. One more question do I need a 64 bit operating system or will 32 bit work. I have a 32 bit for the machine but I also have 4gb of ram that I can put in there. Which I know it wont see all 4gb. Or do I just need to get 64 bit and stick all 4gb in there. It will be xp pro that I have for it.
 
just 2 VM's and 2 GPU's? you should be fine with the 3 gigs that you get from a 32bit rig, but if 64 is an option, id take it

I think you can run a 64-bit VM inside a 32-bit host OS if you have CPU virtualization extensions enabled in the BIOS and you're using a program that supports them (like VMWare Player, which is what you'll be using if you follow capreppy's guide). I have never tried it myself though, so I cannot confirm it one way or another.
 
Thanks for the help. The mobo should be here today. I will get back it together and running. After the true sets in an starts putting up good temps I will start the folding.

You need to reboot the VM after you've made the changes in IE. On the main page, there is a hyperlink to reboot it.

If your using notfreds, you set up team # on the web page that you download it.
 
Yea I figured it out but got one more question how do I monitor over a network? Is it the same do I need to just share the smp folders that I created or what.
 
Sorry nevermind I got it again lol. I will get a screenshot up in a couple of hours. Got to take care of some stuff and appreciate all the help guys.

Actually, the notfred VM is not configurable through the web page it is downloaded from (the images are configurable that way though). You need to configure it using the browser interface once you have it running.
 
Aight got it running just one flaw I dont know if it is FAHMON or the vm's but they are folding but on the monitoring it is showing that they are hung but I check them and they show up as being up to date on the time. I guess its FAHMON or could be the network part of that pc who knows. Would fahspy be better to run or should I just stay with fahmon. Cause I would like to know total ppd.

Under the settngs for fahmon click ignore asynch clock
Then set all your boxes to use Internet time
The hng issue is due too time being differant, put them all on intert net time and click thatbox
I had the same issue, and sorry for errors I'm on my phone

And did you click client is a virtual machine? That will also help with hung issues
 
Yea I clicked on the client is a virtual machine. Now I am having heat issus. I am goin to give it a couple more days on th cpu cause it is reading at 68-69 under a load and I am usint the ultra 120 extreme. If it doesnt come down I may have to reseat it. Or get a new case with better airflow cause the soprano case I have it in may not be sufficient with just 2 case fans.
 
What is your CPU speed? 68 to 69 isn't too bad. I normally keep my Q6600 @ 3.2 in the low to mid 60's with a TR AXP-140.
 
Q6600 at stock. Which I want to pull it up to bout 3.0 or maybe lower but with the heat issues.
 
Ok. For stock those temps are a bit high. What are you using for Thermal Paste? AS5 or MX-2 or something else?
 
howd you apply it? I know when I first got a "lidded" processor, I covered the whole thing like you do on a non lidded (little dab and spread with razor blade till you have paper thin surface) one, found out that is so NOT how you do it lol

I just put something the size of a grain o salt in the center, press down and turn slightly and thats it.

Not trying to insult you, but there are a million things that can cause high temps, I'm just starting where I screwed up
 
Now I applied a lil bead line down the center and twisted to make sure and even spread and looked to make sure none ran over the sides of the processor and tighten it down. I am talking bout a bead line a lil bit narrow than the way it exits. It looked to have good coverage.
