Been out of the watercooling loop for a while now. I did watercooling back in the days when Eheim pumps were the best pumps because of quietness and durability... but now I see these newer pumps that are a lot smaller.

I've read all the stickies and threads about which pump I'd like to use and I've decided on the MCP350 because it seems the smallest and the quietest. But does anyone know exactly which is the quietest pump right now? Is it the D5 or the MCP series?

And how is the reliability of these pumps? Surely some of you have had trouble since these constantly turn of and on with the PC. Unless they are really that reliable?

Yes. I have invested quite a bit on Iwakits before but they are huge and slightly noisier than the Eheims. I've even owned Panworld's before... I figure I'd try the newer pumps that connect through a molex since they seem much more convenient and smaller. But if what you say is true about the reports of failure with the DDCs, does the same hold true for the D5s? Or are there are lest LESS reports of failure with the D5?
 
All of the Laing pumps are definitely more noisier than any Eheim pump. You might want to look at the Aqua Computer Aquastream pump or the Innovatek HPPS. Both are 12 volt, extremely quiet, and since they are built on Eheim substructure they are extremely reliable. Plus you can usually buy replaceable parts at any aquarium store.
 
Hmmm.... I've had a MCP350/DDC for like 2 years and it hasn't failed on my yet. The only problem with it was that sometimes it would refuse to start up properly when I reset my computer, but that was a firmware problem with the early DDC's.

Dunno about the DDC-Ultra, but the DDC (MCP350) is completely inaudible if u place piece of foam (eg. like the grey stuff used to package video cards) underneath it. I can't hear mine (DDC+Petra's Top) over the 7v Yates..... and have had no probs so far.

Do yourself a favor and ignore her. I think that's justified after mentioning an Innovatek product. Read the xtremesystems linked guide. Think of it as the bible for watercooling pumps.

Eheim pumps are definitely not quieter than the DDC-1 pump. They're quieter than the D5 but about the same level as a DDC-2. How do I know? I own two aquariums and have used a variety of Eheims. Eheim pumps are reliable but they have absolute shit performance. You could pump more by blowing into your tubes than the Eheim can. DDC-2 = 23 feet of head vs Eheim = 5-6 feet of head.

If you're looking for quiet pumps, get the DDC-1 or the new D-Tek db-1 pump. Both are quiet and have a much smaller footprint than either an Eheim and give better performance. If you want reliability & best performance, get an Iwaki (as long as you don't mind noise).
 
When is the last time you EVER heard of an Ehiem pump or it's Innovatek or Aqua Computer variants not starting...

If you want reliability stay away from Laing pumps and they are definitely more noisy. I have had them sitting right next to each other and others have reported the same here in the [H]. If you want a balls to the walls water cooling system then head on over to the xtremesystems board and avail yourself of their knowledge. Even they don't have anything particularly bad to say about Eheim's.

The Aqua Computer and Innovatek pumps are specially made Eheim pumps for running in a PC system. Some say the HPPS out runs the 1048 when appropriately OC's. Both these pumps utilize standard DC voltage and change it to AC voltage through their electronic circuitry. Thus they can increase the pumps output by changing the hertz rate of the AC pump. The only way to increase flow in a DC pump is to change the voltage. Over volting DC pumps leads to other problems.

Do you know there are different variants of Laing pumps, even within the DDC series? The DDC-1 is virtually silent. The only thing quieter is the D-Tek Db-1. I have Eheim pumps like I stated for my aquariums. They're totally reliable yes, but they have no head pressure which makes them pitiful when it comes towards performance. With the amount of head pressure of an eheim, you'd be lucky to have optimal flow after you hit your second point of restriction. Eheim's = no head pressure -> sub optimal performance -> higher temps -> especially in loops with restrictive blocks/radiators. Have fun using an Eheim with the upcoming Duplex from AC.

For the majority of users out there, they'll find AC pumps as being a pita to install. Add the larger footprint of an eheim pump, and you'll see why Liang DDC's, D5's and Aquaextreme AQX50Z's are the top sellers: Performance, compactness, ease of installation.
 
I'm considering the DB-1... although thanks for the suggestion of the Eheim pump as I've used Eheim and they are very reliable. I won't be watercooling my CPU... only the graphics card so I'm trying to build the smallest and cheapest form of watercooling as well as the longest lasting. For that I'm going with black Tygon tubing as I've never had a rig where my tubes didn't cloud after a while.

For me, the pump is the most important as its the one that makes the noise. Thus the consideration for the DB-1. Should be good enough single component cooling... only problem is very few people have had it long enough to determine its reliability, and after the fiasco with the Mag pumps, I'd like to do a little more research... although for 50 it shouldn't break the bank too badly.

I'm gonna cool either the HD2900XT or the 8800GTX... so I'm deciding on just a single 120mm rad, a pump, black tygon tubing, and a t-line with fillport.

You forgot about the one parameter everyone is interested in...reliability. Price, performance, and ease of installation are only good when the reliability factor is right up there. Sorry, but I would never use a DDC unless I had a way to control other parameters to account for the failing of the Laing pumps.

BTW, who cares about the head of the pump in a closed water cooling system? My little Aquastream pump will pump up to the second story in a closed loop where the pump is at ground level. This was proven several years ago by someone who actually did it.

Laing's had a bad batch of DDC's. Most of these failed within the first few hours of usage due to circuitry getting blown upon startup. Other than that, DDC failure rates are well within industry standards. There's no question that Iwaki's are the most reliable pumps in the business followed by Eheim. However, the failure rate of the DDC is being blown out of proportion here.

Head is all that matters for a pump. Nothing else. The faster the pump pushes through the blocks, the quicker it hits the radiator. There's a reason why people put such a premium on low restriction, high flow.
