What i want to do is upgrade my current system to quad-core, because I do a lot of video recording, editing and encoding on top of a lot of general multi-tasking.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with Pentium D 830 and 4 GB of DDR2 667 ram.

The FSB on my board is 800Mhz and I want to use a Q6600 which is 1066Mhz.

For starters if I were to just put in a processor that has a higher FSB than my board would it work?
If not is there anyway to OC the FSB of my board? Program or Flash BIOS with a non-dell BIOS?
If neither of those are possible I will replace me board too, but how can i find out about what form factor to get?

Whoah there pardner!

First off I have absolutely no idea if your motherboard is capable of Q6600 but I suspect not (and that it wouldn't work) not even with an updated BIOS. Dell tend to use motherboards tweaked to their satisfaction, if not an altogether proprietary format.

It's true that both these chips are LGA775 Socket spec but that ain't even half the story.

There's absolutely no point upgrading to run a processor like Q6600 in a half assed way (even if you could/can) plus is the Dimension 9100 motherboard not in BTX format? Which means you can't just swap out the motherboard and replace it with a better one. (im thinking current P35 ATX mobo's)

I'm going to bow out now with the rider that I think you're looking at whole new case, motherboard (ATX format), memory, power supply etc.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge can help you more but I honestly think that is for a whole other thread.

A BIG NO! Intel Chipset 945P. You need a Intel 975X motherboard. Time to upgrade.
