yes we need to know the res but a stock gtx460 would not even be an upgrade in for many games. What resolution are you running? I'd say GTX 460, but I'm probably biased because I have two and they're great.![]()

overall a gtx460 is about equal to a gtx285 with the gtx460 actually being slower in some cases. a 5770 is not even quite as fast as a gtx260 so your upgrade was larger. and really going from a 5770 to a gtx460 its not as massive as you think it is unless that gtx460 is overclocked.Really? I went from a 5770 to the GTX 460 @ 1920x1200. I tried single card first, and it absolutely is a massive upgrade.

sorry I misread what he said.He has an 8800GT, not a GTX 260.
Better thing to find out would be his price range. If he can afford something better than a GTX 460, he should get that. Otherwise, he should get the 460. I wouldn't drop below the 460 though.
What, overclock the GTX 460? Won't the E8400 be the bottleneck?
yes it will be in some cases. for games like Clear Sky, Metro 2033, Call of Pripyat, Just Cause 2 and many others though overclocking the gtx460 would be helpful. What, overclock the GTX 460? Won't the E8400 be the bottleneck?
three is no definitive answer because every game is different. at 1600 though the gtx460 1gb is the highest I would go. the gtx460 is a cool running, quiet card this reasonably priced. any faster starts to have very diminishing returns with your cpu and at 1600.Well, out of interest, approx what's the best card I could get before the E8400 becomes an issue?
well a gtx460 is perfect for those games at 1600. a small oc on that gtx460 and you will be getting almost everything possible out of your system at 1600.My primary concerns would be:
Crysis series
Stalker Series
Metro 2033
not sure but I don't recall seeing any complaints. the only time I ever hear it on my gtx260 is when going through the start up videos in Crysis with vsync off. even then I have to listen for it because its very very faint. What's the 460 like with regards to coil whine? The GTX 285 is a nightmare.
What about vs the GTX 285? As long as I don't see my brother's rig outperforming mine I'll be happy...![]()
like I already mentioned, the gtx460 and gtx285 are basically even. the gtx460 has more potential though because it has a free 20-25% more performance available through overclocking and it scales linearly. What about vs the GTX 285? As long as I don't see my brother's rig outperforming mine I'll be happy...![]()
while that is a great deal I see no point in fooling with crossfire issues. for 50 bucks more he can have a brand new gtx460 that is cooler, quieter, consumes much less power and is not too much slower. What's your max budget OP??
If you don't want overclock, here's a 4870x2 for $125....certainly BLOWS the rest of the cards away in this price bracket and you dont need to overclock to do so.
Well of course run Vsync in all games too, I honestly haven't seen any microstutters with my card since I did all thativiyth0s, turning on triple buffering from CCC does NOT do anything for DX games. that setting is for OpenGL only. you will have to force triple buffering on through a third party app like Rivatuner if you want it to work in DX games.
It's not the magical cure but it's part of itI'm pretty sure triple buffering isn't a magical cure for microstutter. If it was, there wouldn't be any debate over microstutter at all. I remember microstutter with my 9800GX2, and I'm pretty sure I had triple buffer enabled, as I always enable it for v-sync.
I have considered that. It's just that in the past when I've started the waiting game, I usually end up waiting indefinitelyThere's always another upcoming release that will be *the* card...
I use DXOverrrider.
Oh bugger. I see the GTX580 already in the shops on pre order. Must resist.
EE is somewhat loud and makes an annoying fan noise too from what most have said. I would go with the standard cooler. Are you referring to the standard HSF design or the external exhaust version. I was going to go EE for obvious reasons, but then I saw a review saying that it was louder than the original cooler.
Any thoughts on noise re standardd cooler (central fan) vs external exhausting GTX 460?

budget isn't limited? you said in the op that you were too poor to upgrade your cpu. using a gtx580 with a dual core cpu is very wasteful and a much cheaper card would give you the same playable performance in most games. and what do you mean the 580 is only up fro pre order? that card has been out for a while now. and yes the reference cooled gtx470 runs hot and loud. not quite as bad as the gtx480 though.Budget isn't really limited. Nor is PSU.
I only see the GTX 580 listed for pre order. How soon is soon? I don't want to be waiting long.
Is the GTX 470 hot like the 480?
