Can you please provide a link for your PSU? Never heard of that brand or PSU.

are the amd chips good now ?

im using a e8400 @ 4ghz at the moment

would i notice any difference with the amd chip ?

Core 2 E8400 @ 4.0GHz? That' s still pretty kick ass. I don't think it's worth getting the X4 955 Quad if it's just gaming. You might as well just sell your HD 4890 and get a Radeon HD 5870 video card. You should see a pretty good boost

Just make sure the Radeon HD 5870 video card can fit in your case though as it measure around 12"

What is your current mobo, does it have crossfire? You could add a second 4890 for similar gains if it does. If it doesn't your 4890 has good resell value, sell it and upgrade to a better single card solution, like the 5870.
I agree too, a e8400 OC'd that high is a nice setup for gaming. You won't see much improvement if you migrated to the x4 955, at least not right now. There's a chance in the near future games will start using all four cores, but I'd wait personally.

i would agree with these guys as well, with a cpu upgrade you wont notice much of a difference in gaming. a newer gpu would do you much better, like they said probably a 5870 or 5850

unfortunately my motherboard dont have xfire or another hd4890 would of been great.

its a DFI bloodiron p35-t2rl

a 5870 looks good then

These numbers should give you an idea of the performance increase you will get by upgrading to a Radeon 5870. It won't be these exact numbers since it was tested with an Intel Core i7 cpu but, you get the idea.

wow that is some increase.

just been offered a q9650 plus 4gb ddr3 PC3-12800 ram plus striker 2 nse for a bargain price

would this be a good upgrade from a p35 board with e8400 and pc2-8500

How much for the combo?

Pretty decent. But you might not notice an actual performance increase in a majority of your games over your current setup.

You're better off getting a new GPU and getting a newer quad-core setup later on when it's really needed for a majority of the games you play.

then i was thinking of getting another hd4890 and xfire

You'd have to get a new mobo then since the P35 didn't support x8/x8 Crossfire. In addition, despite of being good quality, the PSU doesn't have enough amperage/wattage to support HD 4890 Crossfire.
