Hi i got a 24meg connection. We have recieved a modem from the supplier but the wireless is TERRIBLE!!!!
So i wanted to know the impact on speed if i do the following:

Connect a HUB(8 port like a GS608) to the modem, connect another 5 pcs to the HUB.

What would be the impact on speed from sharing 5 pc form one hub which is connected to 1 ethernet port on the router?

Is it better in terms of speed, reliability to get a new wireless router?

You want to get a router to share the single connection from your ISP. You also benefit in that your PCs are protected behind the NAT firewall of the router.

The GS608 is a switch, not a hub....hubs are extinct these days, a basic switch performs the same function as a hub...but performs better.

Most routers have a built in switch on the LAN side with at least 4 ports.

Sorry i failed to explain myself clearly.

  • There is a access problem to the router which my isp provided.
  • The router is the one my isp gave me. Its wifi is rubbish.
  • There is a access issue in that the switch has to be outside of the room in the hallway
  • Thinking of connecting the router the isp gave me to the ethernet wire already in the room that leads to the hallway.
  • Connect the end of the ethernet wire that is in the hallway already to a SWITCH.
  • Then connect other ethernetwires leading to every other room from that switch.

Question needing advice on: The problem im worried about is regarding using that SINGLE ethernet port on the router the isp gave me to feed the switch in the hallway which provides a connection to the other rooms. Would there be a speed issue since its coming from one ethernet port from the router?

Hope this time i explained it better and thoroughly.

Thanks

  • Oh...I thought you originally said it was a modem.

Which make/model home gateway then? Some allow severalor more connections via DHCP, depends on the model.

No because that port is faster than your Internet connection.

To answer your other question wired is always better than wireless except for mobility.
