have always used speakers, but in a barracks now so gota keep it down at night. was thinking about going out and geting some from wallmart, but i thought i would try posting here to see if i might be able to get something good for cheap. whats some good headphones i can get for music and games? no more than $50
also, why do people have amps for earphones?

gamesurrond muse 5.1 dvd
athlon xp 2000

Many of the "high end" headphones have higher resistance (ohm rating) to their lesser brethren.

Because of that they can play at a decent level with the onboard amp in most sound cards, but an external amplifier can make them really come alive. What that means is the external amp will help widen the sound stage, and make the sound "fuller"

Since your price range is about 50 bones, I would suggest a few different models.

If this is just for Computer/Home use, I suggest a can that is more isolating. Good modesl are
Koss R80
JVC-Victor HP-D2
Senheiser HD-497

For a more portable model I will suggest the Koss KSC35 or Koss PortaPro in that price range.

If you go up to 60 bucks, I can suggest some different options getting into the higher end.
