I am having the hardest time deciding whether or not to purchase a 4960x chip. I found it on CL brand new in package and the guy is willing to take $700 for it. My dilemma is I already have a 3960x chip in my rig now. Is it worth the upgrade for the price I'm getting it for? Knowing that I may get $400 out of my 3960x chip realistically. What are your thoughts?

You just money burning a hole in your pocket. :D
I wouldn't do it, but that's me. It's your money.

I probably would not get it.. Is it really worth $300 in the end for a slightly faster processor? It would probably be better to just overclock the 3960x if you really want to and save the $300 for something else.

If you keep it for 10 years at 24/7 usage, the 30-40 watts saving when overclocked under load might be worth it.

Had to look up that chip you have up...damn. Friggin sweet.... I know my sandycore i7 is a POS compared to that thing but there isnt a game out there thats made it even get close to breaking a sweat. (prime 95 and intel burntest are really boring games)

That being said I don't run sli.....even so, I have a hard time thinking a 6 core is going to bottle neck a pair of 780ti cards. Unless you are stuck at the 3.3.... those wafers have a K series? I'd hope for 1000$ Intel would give you an unlocked multiplier...

Put that cash towards a bigger, higher resolution monitor. Or a whole buncha 19x10 120hz displays.
