Need advice on a storage system

At a local college radio station I was granted $1500 for a storage system. However, i'm in a deliema in how to set it up. I'm looking for around 1TB of formatted storage, but it needs to be expandable without recreating the array and destroying the data, Additionally, I would like the array to be seen as one logical device for ease of management.
