Ok guys, im not gonna completely upgrade my machine, ill keep my case, PSU, sound card, speakers and video card which i just got, and does ultra speeds with ease :D. But as i have figured out, i do 11k on 3dmark 03 with the card at ultra speeds. I am obviously cpu limited. So i need some advice. I plan on spending $400-500 on a cpu/mob/memory upgrade. So im asking u guys, since the amd 4000+ is coming soon, what should i do, what would be the best overclocking solution.
 
I'd say go with a Socket 939 Athlon64. Not the FX, obviously, given your budget. But a nice 3000+ with some decent RAM and an Nforce3 mobo will set you up nicely and probably give you good overhead to OC if you choose to. The only thing is I'd suggest waiting a couple of months until Socket 939 is more widely available. You'll be getting a good deal on a system that has a solid upgrade path in the near future.
 
ah i cant reuse my zalman cooler :(. i could prolly afford a 3200+ in 939 form. Are the 4000+ gonna be clocked at 2.6? Since im a+ certified, and i installed the zalman myself, i can prolly tackle the heatsink and fan without too much trouble. Whats the best HSF combo out for the 939 boards right now anyway?
 
Well, if it's mobo mounted then any cooler that will fit Socket 754/940 will fit Socket 939. That's a fair number of options.
 
the slowest socket 939 cpu, is the amd 3500+, if i upgrade sometime soon, should i go for the socket 939 or socket 754? THe 4000+ is gonna come out soon, and drive the price down on everything else.
 
So should i go for socket 939, instead of socket 754, also what motherboard should i get and what memory should i go for?
 
ok guys i did a search, i guess a socket 939 is more futureproof. But the athlon 3500+ is a whooping $345 at zipzoomfly.com Ouch. How long u guys think it will take to get that price down to say, i dunno 250ish, 240ish? I also heard DFI is making a socket 939 board soon, so thats the board i bet. Memory is this good Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2 1GB DDR400 XMS3200 Dual-Channel Memory w/Heat Spreader for $226?
 
Yeah, for something that will last a while.

3500, wait for a DFI board so that will allow you to save some cash for a bit after you purchase the CPU, and RAM.

Sounds like a decent plan.
 
will that corsair ram that i mentioned above work or should i get some ddr 433 ram? if i get it to o/c to 2.4 ghz, isnt that 3800+ speeds? 2.6 4000+ speeds?
 
It can't hurt to have some next version ram sitting around in aticipation.
 
i cna get a gig of corsair ddr 466 ram from zipzoomfly.com for bout 275. Right now just for a mobo, cpu, and memory costs $739! How long u think the prices for the 3 drop to bout 500-600 range?
 
whats the ETA on the socket 939 DFI board? Also, its only $2 more for DDR 500 corsair over the DDR 466, so ill get that instead when it comes time to upgrade.
