Seeing as how my server is currently set at raid0 and I'm starting to put irreplacable data on my server, I'm going to redo the server for raid5.

What are people using for your terabyte+ servers in regards to a case, removable hd trays? I'm in need of something that can support 2 psu's for expandability and not in a rack mount form factor (my server resides in a closet so being tall is not an issue).

Secondly I'm running a dual p3 600 setup. I want to upgrade to gigabit ethernet, but I was under the impression that a pci solution is bad since it could/would saturate the mb's bandwidth? I'm not exactly sure what mb I have in there, except its a e-atx intel board. I am also using a pci raid controller too.

Raid1 is safer than Raid5...

As for cases, you need to cruise your pointer over to www.servercase.com

How many drives do you have?

Ah i'm so silly, I meant I have raid0. Currrently I have 5 drives, 1 for OS, 2 200gb, 2 300gb. I'm planning on redoing the drives.

I use a Supermicro SC942i. It's got a triple-redundant power supply, 9 5.25" bays (I've got two 5-drive-in-three-bay hot-swap cages), and a 4U formfactor. I know you said no rackmount, but it came with feet and a top that converts it into a desktop tower. I love the case and I'll easily recommend it to anyone that doesn't mind noise (It's louder than my vacuum cleaner)...

Other people like the CoolerMaster stacker. It's got room for two power supplies, many bays, and a tower format.

On another note, if the data is irreplacible, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a tape drive to back the data up. If a power supply dies, it could take out every drive in your system with it. RAID's more for uptime than for backup. If you insist on using RAID for your backup solution, use RAID-1, and disconnect the drive(s) after you sync with the array.

raid5 will do for now. I do weekly backups. The stacker looks like a great case, I never knew drive trays were so expensive! The only reasy why I wanted them would be the ease to replace a drive without having to pop open the case...
