I recently recorded a tv show marathon on my computer and need a way to spit the 1 avi file into the episodes and remove the commercials. What is the best, preferably free, program to do this?

You're looking for a video editor. Windows Movie Maker is included with Windows Live. You can find more options by searching through this forum.

If you just want to cut up .avi containers then VirtualDub is your best bet:

Make sure to set the output to "direct stream copy"

This way you wont be modifying or re-encoding the video or audio at all. You will simply be modifying the file in its original format and it only takes seconds to split and combine.
