Need a some parts for old computer

My sisters have an old Gateway Pentium 450mhz computer that they use for 3 things, Web browsing (including email), Instant Messanging and Writing papers. Everythings else is done by a different computer, including printing. My uncle just gave me grief about allowing this hunk of junk to get as bad as it is. Mainly its needs RAM and a Video Card.
Something has gone wrong with the current card and it makes shadows out of almost all horizontal lines. I know its not the monitor, because my uncle just gave us a nice 19" CRT and the problem is the same.

I have not opened it up so I dont even know if it can accept AGP cards, but I doubt it. So I am looking for a suggestion on a PCI video card (remember no 3d graphics needed) and how much ram should I get for it?

If you want more info I will walk upstairs and look at this thing a bit more. The worst part of it is that there is no Win 98 disk, so I cant fix all the errors that have accumlated over time, by doing a fresh OS install.
 
If it's really going to be used for all that 3 things, just get the following:

8 MB PCI Video Card (Does it matter what brand? :rolleyes: )
128 to 256 MB (Depending on which OS you're going to install on it).
Windows 98 can work out just fine honestly. And if you have no other Windows 98 CD then how are you going to do it anyway?

Yeah, I was just wondering what everyone recommends for RAM. I figured 512 was overkill, and seeing how no one recommended it, I am right.
Without the need for 3D graphics I figured that I would only need an 8mb card, but will probably splurge for a 32mb card because their oh-so-cheap.
 
256MB is more than enough for 98 and 128MB will work fine.
 
I'll probably go with the card above, just because this user review is so frickin hilarious.
Great Card for pentium 1's. I have two Pentium Pros (200mhz) and they run counter-strike 30fps at 400x300!!

EDIT: found this one for $8: LINK. Only 8mb, but dual-monitor support.
 
If you have one of those computer recycling centers you can get stuff dirt cheap..Or look/talk to your local mom and pop stores...Usually they have that old just just lying around......
 
hmmm, know of a list or can search up of 'recycling centers' around here in good ol farmy PA? i would love to look around nearby.
