I have an Crucial M4 256GB as the sole storage drive in my gaming computer. I'm down to less than 50GB of space because of the games I have installed (was at 20GB til I deleted some installs). I've decided I'm going to get a 1 or 2 TB HDD to install the games that are only played occasionally and for all the digital content purchased online.

Here are my requirements: very quiet, reliable/stable, 1 or 2 TB, less than $120 USD. I'm flexible with most of the requirements, except the noise levels. It has to be very quiet since I play in the living room, mostly at night, and more importantly, computer sounds annoys my wife when we streaming digital content :).

Here's what I've found:
- WD Green 2TB (http://www.amazon.com/WD-Green-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B008YAHW6I) -- can save $20 if I get last year's model (http://www.amazon.com/WD-Green-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B004VFJ9MK/ref=pd_sim_pc_2)

My initial thoughts are the WD Green are the best bet, but I believe the Seagate is faster. However, I'm unsure how much louder the Seagate is over the WD. Any thoughts on my suggestions? Any other HDDs I should look at? I'll definitely have more questions once I buy a drive since I've never used more than one in any system. And I've never had to transfer files across two internal HDDs. So prepare for more questions in the future...

The Seagate you posted is a 3TB, not a 2TB.

That particular Green drive is new to the market. Considering how bad the other Green drives have been, I can't recommend that Green drive until more reviews pop up.

Between the two drives, I'd go with the Seagate. Definitely a decent value.
 
Sorry for posting the wrong one. The same link includes the 2 TB version for $103. My only concern with the Seagate is noise. I noticed you have a few Seagate HDDs installed Danny Bui. How is the noise generated from them?
 
I have older Seagates so anything I say about them doesn't really apply to the newer ones. Also I have the Antec P180 which pretty much deadens HDD noise. So not sure if it's entirely helpful for you.
 
I use a Seagate Barricuda 1TB drive for games on my new desktop. The drive isn't actually too loud...of course, I have a few large fans pushing air so the fans deaden the sound somewhat.
 
Thanks for the input. I guess I will likely go with the Seagate and if noise is an issue, I'll figure something out. Speaking of noise and cooling, does soundproofing material inside a case help with noise and cooling? Or just noise?
 
Noise yes. Cooling. In fact it increases the temperature of the PC.
