I have a friend staying with me untill she gets on her feet and I allow her to use one of my computers for online job applications and such but I noticed last night that she has been deleting the internet history. I need to be able to log whats going on with the computer while she's using it so I can make sure she's trying to help herself or I'll honestly have no choice but to give her the boot.

Does anyone know of any software that can monitor at the very least internet useage through IE8 and Mozilla? I need a program that will make me a log file that cannot be deleted or at the very least is hidden so it cannot be found by the average relatively PC illiterate person.

Even in spite of your claim that it's your computer, such software is generally regarded to be a privacy concern, and because no one can back up your claim you probably won't get many suggestions.

It's like asking people to recommend a key logger, and those things are just too hot to handle, even in spite of it (probably) being your PC that person is using.

If you tell the person that they may be monitored, I don't see the problem.

OP just tell her that you have ways to keep an eye what is going on with your computer. That alone will probably be enough to scare her strait.

If you have an extra box, you could setup an untangle server. It has the capability to both filter and monitor and would be transparent to the other machines.

Maybe password protect your account, and enable a guest account? Might not be able to delete history in a guest account.

I'm more concerned about making sure she's not just going on facebook all day. It just seems that she's only hopping arround job sites after I get off work and not all day like she should be. I don't mind helping someone out but I just want to make sure my generousity isn't being abused.

Ideally I just want to know what sites she goes to and how long she's there would be nice as well. I'm not out for a keylogger, just a way to track visited sites and time stamps and duration would be prefferable.

if you don't trust this person then get them out of your house. realistically there is only so much hunting you can do a day, and no doubt she is as frustrated as you are, and the economy is not going to help any time soon.

Check your router. Some have built in logging and all you have to do is enable it.

k9webprotection.com

It's a blocker BUT you can turn off the blocking feature and just use the logging feature. Works great.

Thank me later. ;)

P.S. K9 is safe... no spyware(except YOU spying on your friend that is ;)) or anything of that sort, so don't worry about that kinda thing. It's a safe program from a reputable company.

K, I'll give that a try. Once she gets a job I told her she can stay with me for a month or 2 rent free while she saves money to get her own place.

lol, hope you are getting something out of the deal. but not too much.

Getting nothing out of the deal except feeling better about myself which is why I'm so strict about this. As long as she try's to better herself and help herself I'll help but the second she tries to take advantage of my kindess the free ride is over.

It doesn't hurt to help people as long as they don't expect you to do it all for them.

I think the better option would be to talk to this person about it. Tell them that you are being generous (free place to stay, free internet to job hunt, free food?) and would like for them to be diligent about job searching and not take advantage of your friendship.

If after a time you don't think thats happening, tell them its not working out and they'll have to take free ride somewhere else. Don't spy.

Spector soft.

x2

You get danged cool detailed reports, sent to you on a regular basis (hourly by default..and any instant messaging activity can get sent to you right away).
The program won't be detected, runs completely hidden.

or you can just get a dell laptop and enable the webcam from wherever you are.

personally I don't believe it is ethical to spy on someone who has permission to use your computer.

You're saying unethical to spy but ok to be a peeping Tom lol.

You could download a keylogger program (which logs much more than keys)-- TPB has tons of them.

How will the webcam of a laptop..located above the screen pointing at the person, let you monitor where they're surfing and that they're doing online? Maybe, if you see them masturbate or something...you can assume that they're on some porn site. Unless the person is wearing flat mirrored sunglasses...

I'm pretty sure he was just joking in reference to the recent incidents Dell has had with employees doing this to customers.

I just edited the HOSTS file in my C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder to block facebook, mocospace, myyearbook, myspace and adultspace where she had been going then I made my account limited, removed the registry entry that allows the toolbar in IE so she can't clear her web history, removed all the games from the start menu and from my desktop and a few other things that kinda pissed her off but I told her, job first, PC second.

I think it'll all be worth it as she can still check her emails and jkob hunt and she now realizes that I'm serious and I gave her till the 15th of next month to find a job as she's been with me a month already and it doesn't take that long to find a job flipping burgers untill you can find something better.

Thanks for all the help :)

Some people think they are above flipping burgers, even if it means being a bum with no job.

Graduated and have no job yet. And I refuse to do something I would of done when I was in high school or back in college without a degree. Easy with that comment there Bro Montana.:p

When you have a job, you can be picky about where you go from there but when you have nothing, well . . .
