so i feel i need a tv for my school suite and the price range is very flexible (400-1400) as im not sure if i want to go crt, lcd, projector or a cheap plasma. id like to have at least 30" as my monitor is 24" and id like to have a noticable difference in the size. id want decent quality but if id have to sacrifice some for an increase in size id be okay with that.

few questions. do you guys think that crt picture quality is better than the rest without any question? also, what do you think of refurbished items. i can grab a projector and screen for under 700 and get a 30" phillips lcd for under 900 if i go that route.

anyway, any tips on tvs i should look into would be appreciated. thanks.
 
CRT is without a doubt the best image quality available especially if you're looking for a 30" - 34" display. Go with a Sony CRT HDTV for the brightest / cleanest picture, such as one of these:

Sony 34" HS420

Sony 30" HS420

Sony 34" XBR960 - The grand daddy in image quality but expensive.

I have a 2.5 year old Sony 32" HDTV used for gaming & movies (ps2/xbox/gamecube) and the picture quality is amazing,I took this pic of it playing a DVD (480P res)

LCD 100%...

not only do lcd's have all the benefits of plasma... but its also future proof...

LCD is the way of the future.... CRT's are out, plasma's are almost out... LCD's are in...
and projection tv's are also almost out.... they have the worst viewing angles...

You need to do some research bud :rolleyes: In terms of image quality a Tube HDTV CRT will look better in *every* category, such as Black levels , Grey Scale, Contrast Ratio , No viewing angle restrictions ,No worries of running differant resolutions with reduced image quality due to interpolation, and no motion blur / ghosting with CRT's sub 1ms response times.

If you want something bigger than a Tube CRT (34" Widescreen or 36" 4:3) Then I'd go with Plasma or DLP, LCD would be my last choice.

I have to agree with the above poster. The best picture you are going to get is with a CRT. I believe that samsung just introduced a new series of THIN (relatively speaking) CRT's. They are about 30% thinner than a traditional CRT and it won't take-up as much room in your suite. So, take a look at one.

Direct view CRT is going to have the best image quality, like the above posters said.

However, they will weigh more, have convergence/geometry problems, and can suffer from burn in. They also have a size limit.

The best of the micro displays, in my opinion as a former video engineer would be Sony's KDF-42A10 or KDF-50A10 3LCD rear projectors...
 
There's hasn't been any LCD xcept the sony 42" LCD that can impress. LCDs do an awful job with regular NTSC / DVD feeds. I hate gray - washed out images
