I have a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 sound card which to be honest is really old and rubbish. I also have a cheap set of speakers which is a pain because there are 3 speakers.... 1 large one and 2 small ones either side and in my sound options i can select

- 2 speakers
- 4 speakers
- 5.1
- 7.1
- headphones

So my first question is

1) what is the best option for my speakers since i dont have 2 or 4, i have 3. (I have it set on 2 speakers at the moment)

As well as the speakers, sometimes i use headphones (technics stero RP-F200)

2) would i need to change the audio settings from 2 speakers to headphones everytime i used the headphones? I mean will there be any audio improvement?

3) I have AC 97 onboard sound, would anyone use this onboard sound rather than my sound blaster live 5.1 card?

4) I want to buy a better sound card in the near future, what do you all recommend? Its likely i will use headphones.
 
Answer to question # 3:
SBLive! 5.1 is better than any straight up ac97 onboard sound by a longshot. There are alternative drivers for the Live 5.1 cards that can breathe some life into them. You can install audigy2 drivers or you can try the KX drivers instead.

Doing this ought to hold you over till the upgrade itch gets unbearable. I'm personally waiting for the next generation cards to appear.
 
Modifying the audigy 2 drivers just seems a lot of hassle, ill try the KX drivers, would i need to uninstall the creative drivers before installing these KX ones?

If someone cause answer the others questions also if you can, thanks
 
I would assume creatives drivers need to be uninstalled but i'd still skim thru the comprehensive KX FAQ as well.

I downloaded the KX drivers but didnt install those.

In my first post above.... I said i had a link for some hacked audigy 2 drivers, i installed them and now it says in my driver date 2004 so the installation did work.

Now got version 5.12.1.444. Should i keep these now, or go ahead and install the KX drivers?
 
I'd say first test what you have with audio you're VERY familiar with. That will help you notice any improvements with the new drivers. When i say audio i mean both music and games ;). Don't forget to experiment with settings in the audio control panel.

If you don't notice any improvements whatsoever then go ahead and try the KX drivers instead.
 
well.. what you have is a set of 2 speakers with subwoofer - it is a 3 piece system but works as a 2 channel setup.. and yeah - use the SB Live card..

OK, after installing the hacked Audigy 2 drivers, they seemed fine but i wanted to see how these compared with the KX drivers, so i uninstalled everything sound wise.... SB Live drivers the lot.

Installed KX drivers, and i got no sound..... so they dont seem to work for me. So i gone back to the hacked Audigy 2 drivers and i got sound back. But Now i have no Audio HQ in control panel.... why is this and how do i get it back?

That sounds like a subwoofer and two satellites... a 2.1 system. Depending on the input it may just be a simple stereo device. Either way, your computer is going to see it as a 2 speaker setup.
