Need a new shoulder strap

Any recommendations? I was looking at the R-strap, but it seems they all attach to the bottom of the camera. I don't want that as I work too much with a tripod.

I looked over a few Domke, OP/TECH, Tamrac and some random straps on B&H, but couldn't find anything I like. Am I missing something?

What shoulder straps are some of you using? Preferably with a quick release near the camera, but it isn't necessary. Up to $100.

I personally use an R-Strap Sport 2.

I also do a lot of work with a Tripod. I find that when I do the tripod stuff, I simply unscrew the stud and leave that attached to the strap... and leave the strap on.

There are some types of plates that allow the stud to stay on and still mount them on the camera body. But I'm a addicted to the RRS L-bracket I use, and there isn't a substitute for that.

I have the RRS L-blacker myself, so that isn't a problem, but I just find the bottom screw a nuance on the straps.

I'll give the R-strap another look.

I'm using a Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap + a Custom SLR C-Loop HD mount. Similar idea to the R Strap in that it uses the tripod mount, just a little beefier and it doesn't slide on the strap.

The thing I wish is that the RRS L-bracket had a 1/2 screw mount on the portrait side. If I'm using a tripod, I'm probably shooting a landscape, which also probably means I'm shooting in landscape orientation. If there was a 1/2 mounting screw on that side, I could have the RRS stud mounted to that, which would mean I wouldn't detach it as frequently. I am a tweaker though. If I leave my tripod at home, I detach the L-bracket every time. I'm a stickler for weight.

The sliding is a feature. There are locks on the R-strap to prevent sliding when undesired (like say scaling a rock face.) The Sport and Sport 2 also have the underarm strap for extra security, and by security I mean immobility of the strap itself.

Of course straps like all things come with a high degree of preference. It seems like this option is more designed to be used with any strap, which isn't a bad thing at all, if that's what you want.

I searched around the web and found this forum discussion on POTN: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=796825
There was some people mentioning cotton carrier, which after looking at it seems unideal for those of us wanting to mount our cameras to tripods easily and quickly. The problem is worse than on a R-strap because it requires a hex wrench to put on and take off the stud. However I did notice Sun Sniper, that seems to have options worth considering.

I think it would be a harder to grab and position the camera properly in the same timely manner if the strap was in fact attached to the side of the camera like that. And probably some weight distribution factor we're overlooking :p
But you're right about detaching the plate for the day if you know you won't be using the tripod. I was thinking about just that last night myself. It takes all of 30 seconds to either attach or detach the plate from the camera. So I might just do that.

The cotton carrier is a definite no-no for me. I usually carry my spare lenses on my belt, and that is usually enough weight already. A friend of mine has something similar, although even more bulky and obscure, and I've only seen him use it one time. I remember seeing him being excited after getting it, and now he doesn't even want to use it, lol. I have seen a similar mounting clip with an arca-swiss clip on a Kickstarter page, but I can't find it anymore. I wonder how that one turned out.

Thanks for the input guys! And thanks for the link, I'll be sure to go through it after work.

Yeah I know the sliding is a feature, I just wasn't a fan of it on the R-Strap. CustomSLR also sells a glide strap for the C-Loop as well as a universal QR plate for Manfrotto and Arca Swiss tripods that is compatible with their straps/loops so you can use both. They're pricey though.

You almost sold me on the CustromSLR with this post, but after watching the video I realized this plate wouldn't be compatible with my RRS flash bracket, lol. :p

I'm starting to think I'll need to design my own strap, and start a Kickstarter campaign to get it rolling

//edit: Picked up R-Strap Sport 2. Will be here on Friday.

I totally know what you mean. The R-Strap definitely isn't perfect. It's just the best solution that I know of for now. There was a recent startup that I think made a really nice dual strap, but even they said that it had elements that jingle (as in, make noise) and listed it as an old timey feature (the straps I believe are made from leather, the whole setup kind of looks like a holster, not a hip holster, like a shoulder holster.)

I don't even remember the name of it. But every system I found has some annoying problem with it. R-strap included. It really feels like it's just about finding the one with the compromises you can deal with.

Here is the camera strap I was talking about. It's from a smaller company called Hold-Fast.

I also found out that this strap isn't necessarily a dual strap, the system can mount 1, 2, or 3 camera bodies. It also has a unique gun-slinger sort of look.

They make other camera strap products as well. Most recently a wrist strap.

I like the website, but not the prices :p

I will admit, the products do look nice, but it's just not something I would buy. Not right now anyway.

Either way, thanks for the Sport 2 recommendation. The screw mounting still bugs the crap out of me, but I like it. It really is comfortable.

If you're using the L-plate a lot, you'll get used to screwing in and out the mounting stud. It only takes me a few seconds to do. I dunno why, but it still bugs me too.

My real complaint with the Sport 2 though is the strap doesn't lock (specifically in regards to length) so I have to tighten it all the time. I've considered using industrial staples to keep it in place. I can tighten it while wearing it with one hand, but it's still not optimal. They could have put a simple piece of plastic to prevent it from slipping.
