The Ultra you got in the sig is a original X-Connect ? If yes, you should ask for a RMA and request a X-2 in exchage. It's a bad batch and I got it as well myself at the start of 2006 before getting a Seasonic.

Bad batch. :)

For some reason I always think of a screwed up package of Nestle Toll House cookies when I hear that. :)

Unless you have a blue/orange any warranty replacement you get from Ultra will be a huge improvement.

its not the x-connect its this one here the volt rails are not that good on it.

Ok, then you are indeed better to pick a different one. For 100$ range, you should check the fortron/FSP, Antec or Enermax.

NO!!!!!!!!!

That's a relabeled Seventeam 500W. Not that that's a bad thing, but it performs mediocre at best as a 500W, which is something you can get for half the money (Ultra, Antec, Sytrin, Sunbeam, etc.)

I have one of those 600W jobbers here pending Cooler Master gettiing back with me with more BS specs. :(

Your choices are all over the place. Do you have ANY criteria for selecting your next power supply or just "$100"?

the most I would spend would be $150 and I'm a n00b when it comes to PSU's so I need some help lol. :p

ok, 150$, and wanted some nice looking psu... Why don't you check the Seasonic S12-500 ? It's close to the PCP&C in quality.

This is now the SIXTH time I've copied and pasted this.... :D

If a pair of 80MM fans is OK with you (not as good of case cooling and tend to be a bit noisier) might I suggest (all under $100):

Enhance 500W Quad-Rail $86.99
http://www.directron.com/ens0555.html
There's a minimum 5A load requirement on the 5V rail, but price is great and has a 38A nominal/42A peak combined 12V rail capability.

X-Finity 2nd Gen 600W $93.00
http://www.directron.com/ult31847.html
FlexForce cables are easy to hide and 32A nominal on the combined 12V.

PP-5503EPS 550W $88.50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817101108
Probably the quietest "pair of 80MM" PSU's I've ever heard. Cheaper at Directron, but Newegg's definitely has the PCI-e. Don't know the combined 12V, but AMS is a trusted brand.

Personally, I prefer 120MM cooled PSU's because they suck air in from over the CPU. That makes the PSU run hotter, but even a 120MM fan spinning fast enough to pull X amount of CFM's is going to be quieter than a pair of 80's (and these are under $100):

X-Finity 2nd Gen 500W $89.99

Very stable and the FlexForce cables are easy to "hide."

TR2 500W $74.99
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=371258
Just reviewed this one. No frills, but pretty stable and very inexpensive.

TruePower 2.0 550W $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103931
Can't dis a classic. Harder to dis a classic revamped.

Real Power 550W $99.99
http://www.directron.com/rs550acly.html
Acbel Polycom makes good stuff... and this one has an eerie blue glow!

Liberty 500W $95.95

I don't know why Enermax made their best PSU ever modular, but this is an all around great power supply for everyone. My only reservation is the cables are gold plated on both ends. I don't think your drives and motherboard connectors are also gold plaated. Gold + Tin = Corrosion.

Of course, if you can muster the flow to buy a PC Power and Cooling, noise may be your only complaint. And if noise isn't an issue, then you won't mind using a higher CFM 120MM in the back of your case to lower ambient temps in the chassis.

But if noise is an issue AND you can muster the $$$ to buy a PCP&C, may I also recommend:

SST-ST56F 560W $130.49
http://www.chiefvalue.com/app/productdetails.asp?submit=&item=17-163-112&ATT=Power Supplies

SST-ST60F 600W $153.00
http://www.sundialmicro.com/SilverStone-Power-600Watt-sstst60f_1723_548.html

Liberty 620W $159.95
http://2cooltek.com/product_info.php?products_id=496

Of course, there's a plethora of choices in between all of these suggestions. These are just brands/models I have personal experience with. Personally (and this is just my opinion) I think the OCZ is over-rated and the PCP&C is overpriced. Not that they're not good power supplies, but let's just say neither scores well in the "value" department in my book. ;) If money really was no object, I'd say get the 1kW PCP&C and be done with it (hope it fits your case!)

Now a lot of those prices may have changed because I originally posted that two months ago.

An addition I would like to make to that list that's come up in the last couple months is the Sytrin Nextherm PSU's imported by Masscool. Currently you can only find the PSU460 in the states, but they promise a 550W and 600W is to be released soon. Great thing about these units is that they're made by a good source (Seventeam,) have excellent efficiency (75-78% typical,) actually have more juice on the combined 12's then some "550W" power supplies and are VERY sensibly priced.

Well.. my work as a Sytrin shill is done.
