I'm running astock AMD aluminum heatsink with my CPU below.
And it's terrible..
I need something that will offer good cooling performance, quiet, will fit in an Antec Solo/P150.
Any suggestions?
The S1238V looks pretty good, IMO.

debatable. def up there. this guy is about equal with the xigmatek mentioned above. this frostytech test shows it being much better than the xig on an amd proc. if you can fit it in your case, for $15AR you def cant go wrong. make sure you can fit it the right direction, air blowing side to side, because in this i7 comparison it didnt do so well, presumably because the reviewer had to mount it rotated 90 degrees on his mobo. also could have been the different structure of the i7 proc. its an amazing deal right now though so definitely check it out. otherwise the xig s-1283 or s-1283 dark knight should both do you very well.

You also have to take FrostyTech's reviews with a grain of salt, wile they list the CCTF as better, they also list the Thermalright Ultra-120 as better than the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme, because they use a heatplate rather than a processor and so it's not what I would call "real world" testing. However, both coolers will be far better than any OEM HSF.
 
Yea... the Xigmatek is typically around $25, and that core-contact is typically $40... but it's got a big rebate right now...

is the xig really typically $25? i dont think ive seen it less than $35. i could have very well missed it though.

yeah i agree completely.. not to mention heatpipe HSF's tend to suffer more on AMD boards due to the fact that they are mounted so that the fans either blowing up or down.. not left to right or right to left as it would on an intel system.. so unless you have a case with a top fan near the cpu your temps will suck..
 
you can mount the cctf either way on an intel board. id think you can do it on amd ones too. not sure.

all depends if it uses the standard AM2 mounting bracket.. if it does then there is only one way to orient it.. if it doesnt and uses its own backplate and mounting bracket then yes you can.. ive never seen the CCTF in person so its hard to tell in the pictures..


but looking at the picture on frostytech it looks like the bracket allows it to sit so that the fans pushing air out the back of the case which is pretty nice..
 
The CCF does indeed have a horizontal mount instead of the vertical ones found on the Xig.
But will it fit in my P150 case?
 
i can take any measurements you need on my cctf. the hard part about getting them to fit isnt the size pre se, but the fact that to install it you have to hook one side, then press the other side down. this means that you need room for it to be leaning when you install it. since i have my psu right above the cpu socket, i had to hook the other side first with it leaning down toward the ground, and then rotate it up toward the psu until it clicked in. really difficult to do. got a system down though and i can do it easy now. funny thing is, when i do this it leans down so much that the heat pipes hit the nb heat sink. so i have to remove that before i install the cctf, then put it back in underneath the cctf after. its kinda a pita. idk is a lot of coolers are like this, but if you can get one that presses straight in, it is a lot nicer to work with. also if you have your psu below the mobo instead of above then you shouldnt have a problem.

That's what I've always seen, $25-35 with rebates... heh... it's still pretty reasonable...

There was that Sunbeam Core-Contact for $15 AR + $2 shipping (which I just grabbed and sent a rebate out for) it's like the Xigmatek except bigger... I like the mounting system better too... it's a pain to get the bracket back off the motherboard after you install it though... heh...

Either way... there's tons of options, those are my favorite design for the price though...
