Need a new GPU fan

I currently have a PNY 9600GT. The card is perfect for what I need but the fan is slowly dying. I have already sent the card back once for a fan replacement but once again it is failing on me. It is making a clicking sound and I can hear it speed up and slow down.

My question is... are the mounting holes on most cards generic or do I need a specific cooler that fits a 9600GT (or more specifically a PNY 9600GT).

I have looked on Newegg and they have a lot of GPU coolers but many of them don't specify which cards they fit. Can I get any cooler that says it fits a 9600GT? (assuming every manufacturer uses pretty much the same reference design).

Thanks for any info!
 
Mounting is fairly universal with generations. Look for a cooler that supports other 9 series cards.

+1, great for the price without a doubt. My HD3870 (stock clocks) ran in the mid 70's at load with the fan screaming its head off. Here are screens with the cooler, first is 100% passive, second is a 800rpm Slipstream, also keep in mind this is with a 860/1250 OC.

Unfortunately they are out of stock for a couple weeks - don't think my card will last that long.

Would it be OK to go with the Zalman or wait on the other cooler? I don't overclock any so all I need is just enough cooling to keep the card from melting on me. Heck was thinking of disconnecting the fan and seeing if passive cooling would be enough!
 
LOL... yeah that occurred to me right after I posted. Found several sites that had it in-stock for about $28.99. Definitely gonna order me one - love the fact that it doesn't need a fan.

Went ahead and ordered it along with some AS5. Got to thinking... should I scrape the thermal pad from the cooler and use AS5 or just stick with what it comes with?

Use what that comes with what? You mean the OEM pad? If so, then no, anytime you take a HS off you should always replace the TIM, you should clean off the old and reapply fresh paste.
