I ordered the baybus from frozencpu (the 3 fan version), and i had used it for about a week, and all the LEDs ended up burning out. So I called them up, and they sent me a new one. So I stick it in, get everything wired up, and now, about two weeks later, the LEDs burned out again. This is not cool. I'm gonna call them back tomorrow and try and get a refund, becuase im not keeping these for a couple weeks, then waiting another week or so for a new one to come, thats just rediculous.

So my question is, what are some good controllers? I don't need anything fancy, but it needs to be reliable (and preferably fit in a 3.5" bay, since i already drilled the holes :/ )
 
I use the Vantec NXP-201 and it's great. Its 3.5" counterpart, the NXP-205, is supposed to be just as good.
 
I heard that those Vantec's let out a low hum when you have them on low voltage. Have you noticed this?
 
Super Flower Fan Master. It will do what you want and has an LCD display. It's also cheap. The Vantec makes a buzzing noise. I stopped using mine because of that.
 
I have the Sunbeam 5.25". Its been working fine for a few months. My only gripe is how bright the leds are but the door on my case covers them most of the time.

What holes did you have to drill for 3.5"?
 
Hands down, the best fan controller is the Sunbeam.
Yeah, the LEDs are way too bloody bright, but they are easy to mod in a number of ways.
All Vantec controllers I've owned emit a buzzing sound which is extremely irritating.
 
Ive got the coolermaster aerogate 2. Electronically controlled, lcd, 4 fans and 4 temperature sensors. Only problem is the temp sensors correspond with the fans, which is bad if say you dont have your vga fan hooked into the fanbus, or a hard drive cooling fan, etc...
 
I like the looks of the Sunbeam and the Super Flower, I just wish they came with the 3-pin to 4-pin molex connectors that the Vantec one does.

I was going to say the same thing. You can file down the rounded part of an LED to a rough flat face. That will dull it some and should really cut back the projection power a lot. When I built my rheobus, I used the 5000mcd Blue and Red LEDs. Needless to say, they were damn bright. (my first thought was an unfocused laser pointer) I filed the rounded parts to a rough, flat surface. The result was a more ambient, soft light.

Another thing you can do is just push the leds back through the holes since the leads are so long.

Mine came with 2 of those connectors and a y-splitter.

I was referring to the ones like the 2 in the middle here that have the large plug like you use for your drives (which the case fans that came with my Lian-Li also have), not the regular 3 to 4 pin adapters:

Did you get these or the regular smaller 3 to 4 pin adapters?

(Noise Isolator Black 5,25")
seems to be the best one on this webshop at an ok price.

And speaking of webshops, have you got any suggestions for good webshops with regards to cooling that takes international orders?

If you mean a pass-through connector, then no, it didn't have those. All of the fans I have bought come with them.
 
I like the Sunbeam, too. Others mentioned the bright leds. You can add a resistor to each one to drop the voltage. In turn, that will dim them down to a more pleasing level. One thing not mentioned is that the Sunbeam will handle high powered fans that exceed the limits of many other controllers. They are easy to mod, too. SVC has the cheapest price, if you decide to try one.
 
Does anyone acutaly need below 5 volts on the Sunbeam? Almost every fan out there will stall at those voltages. I don't even think the Sunbeam gives them a brief period of 12 volts when you first power it on which means if you set the speed too low, it might not start the next time.

True. This is the one flaw. however, it can be modded so that the knobs won't turn that low.
