... that can pick up my voice up from across the room and still plug into the back of my soundcard. I want this for my HTPC so I can use Voice Recognition. I've already got the program setup, but I'm using a really crappy Headphone mic and it can only pick me up when I talking 1-2 inches away from it and my couch is at least 10 feet from my HTPC.

Unless you want to look into a shotgun mic, you're pretty much SOL. What would happen, do you suppose, when the characters in the movie you're watching start talking? When someone says "quit"?

Disregarding the "how's it know when to listen" issue, a mic that good will be very expensive. Like $1000. You'd be far better off getting 10 feet of cable and mounting the mic on your couch.

the program I'm using, Voice Flux, lets you set a command word to start recognition processing. Right now, I have to say "Computer" in order for it to start registering commands. But I can set it for anything, i.e. "SHAZAAM!"

Sounds good, but where can I get a cable that's small enough to not be noticable but long enough to reach the couch and still plug into the mic jack on my computer? It would have to be long so I can string it with my 5.1 cables, and probably white too.

Another idea, what are you thoughts on wireless mics? I haven't done more than a google search about them, so I don't know how well they work.
 
For the cable, Radio Shack or local equivalent will probably be fine - you don't need pricey cable for this application. They'll probably have a 20 foot or so version so you can run it around the back of the couch and get it in a good position.

As for wireless, I don't have much experience except for the ones used on stage (theater). Those are fine, but they run on batteries, and a set of batteries (1 9v) only lasts 3 or 4 hours. This is probably not the best application for wireless.

Any particular reason not to use a remote? As long as you gotta have the thing running across the room to use the mic control, you might be better off with an ATI remote wonder or similar. About $50 iirc, and RF so you don't need line-of-sight. Mine works fine.
 
thanks for the suggestions. I've actually got the remote wonder, well two actually one for each of my computers. :) I just think it would be nice to listen to winamp and be on the couch or in my kitchen (which is close to the couch) and still control it with just my voice. I used this program before in my bedroom when i couldn't find the remote. lol
