i have a WD 160GB drive has some weird problems. every now and then, rather randomly but usually about once every two weeks, sometimes more often, it will just sort of randomly shut down. i'll usually get a write error and the whole system will freeze for about a minute and then it will all go back to normal except the drive no longer appears in my computer. windows is running on a 36gig raptor, the WD drive is a backup drive. i have to shut down for about a minute and reboot to make the WD drive work again. i've had other problems, such as when i reinstalled windows a few months ago and windows kept wanting to install onto the WD drive so i had to disconnect it during the install and reconnect it later. windows said something was messed up on the drive so it had to reorder the file system or something to that effect and in the process about 25% of the files i had backed up on the drive got corrupted, most of those files being my precious AIM logs.
so basically i dont feel comfortable using it for a backup drive anymore and am looking for something very reliable. awhile ago i had my IBM deskstar 60gxp crap out too, and i lost everything on that. so now i dont really care how fast the drive is, and am willing to tolerate some noise, but i want something that i wont have to worry about storing my data on. it also needs to be rather, somewhere in the area of 160gigs. i dont really want to spend much more than 150ish though. buying a couple smaller drives would be fine, i dont really care about that, just as long as i have a place for my important files. i understand seagate is really reliable so i'll probably go with that unless anyone has any other suggestions.
thanks, sorry this was a kind of long post.
