Folks,

I'm looking for a laptop with moderate gaming capability. However, I do want a 15.6" screen, LED backlighting, w/1080p native resolution.

I found one; the Sager NP8690. Do any others exist?

I am not hellbent on either intel or AMD. They're both players, but whichever it has for CPU, it needs a discrete GPU. (C'mon, do you think an i3 would work? I don't.)

Thanks,
Ken

Asus G51JX-X1 $1199

Intel Core i7 720QM(1.6GHz)
Reports say that it comes with 1333mhz ram not 1066 as listed in specs. (Read the reviews)

Asus G51JX-A1 $1299 after $100 MIR

Intel Core i7 720QM(1.6GHz)

The difference between the top 2 is just 2 GBs of ram from what I can tell.

Alternative...

Asus G51JX-X3 $999

  • * Intel Core i5-430M Processor 2.26 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.53 GHz
  • * 4GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM, 2 SODIMM Slots; 8GB Max
  • * 500GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM); Super Multi Optical Disk Drive; Wi-Fi 802.11 bgn
  • * 15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 LED LCD Display; NVidia GTS 360M Graphics Engine with 1GB DDR5 dedicated VRAM
  • * Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) Operating System; Bluetooth; 2.0MP Webcam; Backlit Chiclet Keyboard

All have 1920 x 1080 res (1080) and LED backlit keyboards.

I've been researching these 3 models for the last 2 weeks, and I'm about 95% sure that the X1 is going to be the one I get.

Might have a look at the Dell Studio XPS line. It can be configured with up to an Intel quad and a Radeon 5730.

You realize 1080p is going to be minuscule on a screen that size? My 15.6" is 1366x768 and its sill pretty small.

It's a 15.6" laptop that you can configure to have a 1080p LED-backlit screen.

Oh, and it has a switchable NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. It pales in comparison to the dGPUs in the other laptops linked in this thread, but it can offer moderate gaming capability.. depending on your definition of "moderate." :p

You don't need to use nanosize fonts, you can increase the DPI.

That only works to some extent. Some programs, like the OS and Microsoft's own software, scale great. They work with any DPI no problem and look smoother on higher DPI settings. Other software scales but some things look a little out of place. Still other software just doesn't scale at all, it ignores all that and renders at a fixed size. Worst of all, there is some software where some scales, but some doesn't. Like text will scale up, but not the box it is in.

Not saying it is a killer problem, but something to be aware of. I went for a 1680x1050 15" for that reason. 1920x1080 is just too small on that for me.

Guys,

This is exactly the information I was looking for!

Now I've got to spool myself up and find out the relative merits of the CPU's. I'm guessing that i7 mobility chip at 1.6 Ghz can upclock a bit more if needed. True? Anyway, I need to find out more about the latest intel/nvidia laptop chips.

Thanks,
Ken

I have the Asus G51JX-A1. It comes with more RAM, a backpack, and a mouse.

The 1080p resolution on a 15.6" screen does take a bit of getting used to, but then you go back to a desktop with less DPI and everything looks huge. I like the resolution for viewing two Word documents side by side. Plus it plays everything I throw at it.

It does get pretty damn hot though. I posted some images here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1504223

HP 8540w, Dell M4500 for workstation-type units (superior build quality)... based on the FX 880M, so they shouldn't be awful for games.

Seconding the 8540w. I've one on order right now and it has the absolute best LCD ever put into a laptop thus far (aside from the larger screen in the 8740w).
